DO YOU HAVE HIGH CORTISOL Stress of any kind -mental/emotional or physical- signals the body’s need for stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. The purpose for this increase in stress hormones, particularly cortisol, is to convert amino acids into glucose (gluconeogenesis). The extra glucose helps to provide the body the right amount of energy to deal with stress. In other words, stress is the body’s perceived need for sugar. Those suffering with thyroid issues (hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s, etc) are already physiologically locked in an inflammatory “stressed” state causing cortisol levels to increase, a situation that can become heavily exacerbated over time if left unaddressed or undiagnosed.
