My response of a guest to justcatv's Summoners Con post.
Like most, I was very skeptical of going to Summoners Con, a convention specifically about all things related to the one of the largest Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game, League of Legends, because it was the first of many to come. Like many firsts, there could be a lot of problems with logistics, scheduling, etc, and I had no idea what would happen because there was no prior event to compare it to.
Let's start at the very beginning. It was a day in April, when I stumbled across a Reddit post advertising this convention for League of Legends called Summoners Con. Caught up in the moment, I spontaneously bought the Challenger Ticket to the con not knowing how I would get there, my living arrangements, my class schedule in the fall, or even if I would know anyone who was going. I was excited to finally be able to meet all of the pro players of LCS and the many streamers I watched during lectures.
I meekly told my parents that I was traveling across the country from Boston, MA to Burbank, CA for just a weekend and at first I was told I couldn't go, but after repeated attempts, they gave in.
It was the summer and during my off-hours at my internship, I was planning the cheapest way to get to the con and I found out that there was a recommended date to buy plane tickets that would minimize the costs of the flight. Over the summer, I worked and saved that money because I was paying for my flight and my living expenses entirely on my own in addition to the convention ticket and swag I would purchase at the event because that was the condition I got to be able to go to Summoners Con.
When classes started in the fall at my university, I became increasingly anxious because I couldn't find anyone to share the costs of the hotel room with as well as I found out from my class syllabus that I had a paper due the week before the con and I had a Physics test the week after. I somehow kept pestering my brother, who was also going to Korea for Worlds 2014, to also come with me to Burbank for that weekend. One worry down.
Meanwhile, the whole time between my purchase of the Summoner Con tickets and the actual convention, I was constantly tweeting about the whole thing.
The week before the convention, I was stressed with finish my paper (because I'm awful at writing), as well as doing my Problem Sets due Sunday of the weekend of the convention as the Monday after.
It was finally the Thursday night before my flight to California. I wanted to pack as many things as I could from my Teemo hat, to my Coast hoodie, to my World's jacket and T-shirt, all to show my love I have for the game and everything around it. I also had to take into account that the weather in Boston was about 20-30 degrees colder than the weather in Burbank.Â
And of course I couldn't fall asleep until late because of my excitement. I watch the sun slowly rise. It was Friday morning and also Halloween. My flight was right after my classes, so I brought my suitcase with me and headed out. In the span of my two classes, I was asked plenty of times what I was doing with a suitcase.Â
"I'm going to California for the weekend," I would always reply.
"Just the weekend? You do know we have a test Wednesday right?," they would respond.
"I know."
It was finally time for me to rush from my the end of my 12 o'clock class to my flight at 2. Not wanting to pay for a taxi to the airport, I ran with my red suitcase in hand and my World's jacket on to my flight.Â
After an hour layover in NYC and a 6 hour flight to Burbank and a shuttle ride, I finally arrived at the hotel of the convention at 8:30 PM Pacific.
As we walked into the lobby, just as I expected, there were people walking around with their Teemo hats or League of Legends swag and their orange Crunchyroll lanyards with different colored potions saying Summoners Con. Even after such an exhausting trip, seeing all of these Summoners in one place gave me all the energy I needed for my second wind.
What started my amazing journey through Summoners Con, however, was accidentally bumping into the young Nathan, TheOddOrange, in the lobby. I watched his stream once in a while when I did homework so I recognized him. I grabbed some courage, said hi and told him I'd tweet him later to hang out if he wasn't doing anything. Unknowingly, I started a friendship that would lead to so many more things that would happen during the convention.
My friends often tell me that I'm particularly outgoing, but that's only if I know the people I'm talking to. For the longest time, I was pacing around the lobby not knowing what to do.
Then I realized that everyone who was here, right now, all came together because they all loved League of Legends to come from all places in the world to this hotel for a convention that was entirely for League of Legends, Summoners Con.
That night, I saw sp4zie, Uguubear, UberDanger, the Yordles, CodyPOV, and although I felt like we were from different worlds, we just chatted because we all had one thing in common. We loved League of Legends.Â
Finally it was the day of the con, to be honest, it was a blur. I was a bundle of mixed emotions but mostly excitement with hints of exhaustion. Each person I met, I wanted to keep talking to them. I got autographs, pictures, and hung out. Here are some of the things I remember so well.
Played 5s as Vayne acting as "Gosu" horribly might I add because I never usually play Vayne ever with JayceTopGG, RF Legendary, TheOddOrange, and my brother.
The line with my buds (Haha...)
The best conversations in the VIP room
Getting told I looked like Shiphtur a lot
Listening to the Nicki Taylor sing an acoustic Warriors
Finally getting Meteos to sign my Playboy and got that awkward hug
Overheard a secret leak about some roster changes ;)
The after-party and hanging out with a pigeon.
MEETING ALL OF THE SUMMONERS AND COSPLAYERS AND CONTENT CREATORS AND EVERYONE I CAN'T POSSIBLY NAME.
And so much more I don't even know...
But what really topped it off was when  justcatv was talking with Kelby, Zion, and me and then she noticed my Summoner Name and mentioned that she remembered me tweeting and how it was a pleasure to finally meet me.Â
SummonersCon was life-changing for many people. As I was talking with Gaming Curios, I watched as he made the decision to become a full-time youtuber and decide to move to LA. I watched as people became more and more passionate about League and couldn't wait to go home to play more League and make more content. To be honest, I was also persuaded to make more content, maybe by streaming, writing posts, or creating my own content. I even said the words, maybe when I graduate in a year and a half, I'll move to LA with everyone else.
Even though I realized before that everyone here was a lover to League of Legends, I didn't think they were just like me, a casual player. They felt the same excitement and passion I had for League. They got excited to see swag of their favorite champion or the amazing cosplayers. Summoners Con brought together fans of League of Legends from all places, whether you're a casual player, a professional player, a content creator or whatever. We were all there because we loved the same thing.
We all loved League of Legends. And it was thanks to justcatv and Kevin Khandjian and all of the community that made Summoners Con burst into the scene with spankin' awesomeness.Â
See you next year Summoners.
P.S. Will attach pictures to this post in a few.
