I've been a fan of Guiltmaker since they began as a good friend was their first drummer. He left the band after moving to NYC from Florida and was replaced for this final release from the group before the decided to part ways for good.
Whether it was the band's conscious choice to be nothing more than a solid local band or not, they were one of the better bands in the Tampa area and one of those bands that's live shows were so few and far between that fans came out each time knowing they just might not see them again.
I was lucky enough to see their final show where they played Hidden Affinity in its entirety and was a bit saddened to know this would be the last time any of these songs would be played live. First and last time for a few of them even. There was a development in the band as far as songwriting and a difference in the drumming style was evident when comparing their releases.
For me, THE song on this release is Ghost In The Room. There is a maturity to the song, a feeling that the band had found their place writing the album and this song was the centerpiece. The rest of the album resembles their previous discography and that is not a bad thing.
It is definitely a shame that Guiltmaker no longer exists as I really don't think enough people had the chance to hear them prior their breaking up. My hope is that even a few people read this and decide to take a chance on listening to Hidden Affinity and perhaps the rest of their magnificent work!
