How I Didn’t Become a Villain

Ch. 9 piece

Danny sat on the couch, his chin perched despondently on the back of it so he could watch Tucker go through his kitchen cabinets with growing complaint. They were… lacking a few things, Danny could admit that. But in his defense, he’d had a stressful past week with no real spare time to buy groceries. It was hard to think about keeping himself fed when the Red Hood was stalking him and a little boy placed a huge responsibility in his hands. One he technically completed. (Monique had been right when she told Eddie that Danny would save her. They’d just both been wrong about the how.)

Danny deliberately pushed that to the back of his mind when it started to make his chest tight. He didn’t want to think about her or anything related to her right now.

Instead he grumbled when Tucker roped Sam into his Kitchen Situation. The two took it upon themselves to rectify the problem, ignoring Danny whenever he made a feeble attempt to make them back down. He could only watch as Tucker listed off things into his phone for Sam to buy at the bodega about two blocks down, since she had already gone out to get the pizza.

He wondered, for a brief second, how they got to this point and it was all his mind needed to drift into his thoughts like he was gently hydroplaning on a rough road. He didn’t deserve this from them. It’s been a lifetime, but their lives were completely upended because of him; transformed from what was supposed to have been an ordinary teenage experience into a persistent risk of death, and then into something far worse.

He suspected there was a lot they haven’t told him from the past nine years, which was mostly fine with him. There was a lot he’s never told them, either. He couldn’t help it, though, when the realization dragged him under. They would always be his family, but the distance between them was undeniable. One they all had to put there, for each other’s sake.

And undeniably because of Danny.

His fault.

It’s HEEREE! Chapter 1 of How I DIDN’T Become a Villain is officially up! If you’ve been following the updates, have been wishing for this fic since i made that first post, or have only just seen this for the first time, give it a read!

he especially hates it when annoying creepy assholes asks for his manager

Danny, already cringing internally: the manager isn’t here

asshole: your supervisor then!

Danny, looking them dead in the eye: are you sure you want to speak to my supervisor?

asshole: of course i fucking want to—

Danny: are. you. sure?

asshole: *glares*

Danny: alright but you asked for this. Hey Ray! Someone wants to have a word!

They watch, Danny in tired resignation and the asshole in angry-surprise, as a gangly, Latino seventeen-year-old walks out of the kitchen with a greasy spatula in hand.

Ray: what’s the sitch, bitch?

Asshole’s face goes red with rage and embarrassment

This will very much tie in to some background lore about Pariah Dark and his origins. I’m not entirely sure I’ll be able to get into it during the fic, so I might do a lore drop here instead— but I’m quite eager to share it with you all!

There was an unprecedented problem that popped up with looking for Eddie, though. One that sent an unsteady tremble through Danny’s stomach.

He was being followed.

He hasn’t seen them, much less knew who they were, but Danny knew with 100% certainty that he was being followed. He’d first realized a few nights ago on his way to work. The Denny’s sign was buzzing again, driving Danny crazy like usual. Especially this time when its pitch kept changing sporadically. He recognized what it was, eventually. A warning, but he had no idea what for. That was, until a prickly itch nestled itself in the back of his neck. He was being watched.

From that moment on, he felt that itch every night on his way to work. Like clockwork. Sometimes, he even felt it while he was inside the diner.

It put him on edge.

...

He sat in the hallway outside his bedroom, the Fenton-Foley communicator in hand. Danny tried reasoning with himself. No alerts meant they hadn’t found him. Even just one alert meant they would’ve tried something by now. He was being ridiculous by keeping his computer on 24/7 and looking over his shoulder so frequently on his walks to work.
