Oh wow, old man yaoi. I think that means we’ve made it as writers.
More seriously they’re both Cold War 80’s AI. CHARLEMAGNE was meant for military/espionage purposes and RASPUTIN did the same with a secondary emphasis on attempting to computerize the massive task of central planning the Soviet Union. In real life there was a lot of crossover with the 1970s Cray-1 that ALICE is, but if you did design them visually think you’d want to lean on big chunky keyboards and analog switches, black and green screens, maps and oscilloscopes, reel-to-reel processing. Both machines would be large enough to walk around among their components - while ALICE is somehow able to be contained to her Cray-1 chassis, Charlie and Rasputin are room-sized and built piecemeal as they advanced.
I sort of have an idea of how they’d look as humanized characters but no one wants to see my doodles more than I share them.
OOC: How is the office funded? extranormal taxes?
Nothing certain but death and taxes. Yeah, regular taxes from the US government system plus extra based on certain programs that tax things like dragon hoards and stuff. Wizards operating in the US are subject to some taxes based on what they’re doing, and that can add up to a lot.
The extranormal community is still small at the end of the day, and closely knit. The vast majority of what the Office does is social work, (which is of course very hard and important work IRL, I’m absolutely not downplaying it) and not mind-bogglingly huge SCP-like structures of containment. It probably costs less than you’d think.

How much of this stuff is planned ahead of time, and how much is on-the-spot improvization? Like the Boiler Incident(tm)?
Answering some of the OOC questions I got when I announced my hiatus!
It’s probably something like 80/20, where 80% is on the spot and 20% is pre planned in some way. Typically even the “pre-planned” stuff is more “I’d like to do X thing,” putting a pin in it, and then waiting for something to come across so I can expand on it. There’s very little actual full planning involved, because it’s touch and go whether I’d be able to do anything I wanted based on the asks I get.
Something like the Boiler incident from a few months ago was some of that “I’d like to do this” thing. I had a vague idea that I wanted to do something, and had time that day to stand by the ask box to develop the idea. The audience for OPN is really creative, and we can usually lean on that at least a little bit.
An example of something that was planned out way more would be the events in general and the MISSI Takeover in February specifically. (I’ll tag this post with the tag I used for that. You can click that to check out the whole event. Don’t forget to add /chrono to the url to see all the posts in chronological order.) My co-writer and I batted around ideas for weeks leading up to it. We knew there would be a poll, we knew the broad strokes of what was going to happen, we had some idea of notes or lore we wanted to hit. There were a few moments where we said “oh that ask is perfect for X thing or Y note we wanted to hit.” Even then, only the “war room” story posts were pre-written in any way, usually about a half hour before we posted them to give us time to adapt. Everything else was written on the spot by one of us.
did we ever get a description of how norm and jenny are visually? evwn just like, major features.
Not yet. I’ve been intentionally evasive Re: Norm but look for that to change in the short term.

When you first came up with the idea for the OPN did you have a through story in mind? I love the in universe Q&A with added bits of world building and events. I'm just curious what your plan was vs where we are now?
To the world building side, is the OPN one central physical site with satellite locations? In my head it's laid out a bit like a college campus with different departments having their own spaces.

For the first question, I touched on it a little earlier, but I’ll add that the big “storyline” I had intended the players in the OPN TTRPG to unravel is more or less intact as the backstory to the blog. (LA, etc.) there was a big change suggested by my co-writer, Jenny’s writer, but after I developed more of my old ideas that plot migrated pretty early on.
There’s dozens of locations throughout the United States, but many of them are just one small office with what amounts to social workers and a few O-Sec staff, in order to help local extranormal folks with resources or guidance. There’s fewer bigger locations, probably about a dozen in major cities, and the biggest is the DC location, where Norm’s office is and a lot of the story stuff takes place. That site is, yeah, a bit like a campus. DC doesn’t have everything, they don’t have a Parafiction department for example, but it has a lot of different labs and offices. Norm’s is down the hall from Holistic Theology. There’s also a few locations that are strictly scientific or industrial - we’ll learn about the latter in an interview soon.
