Bush tried to dress quietly, but Hornblower woke anyway.

"What time is it?"

"Morning watch, sir."

"Did you get any sleep? You have a raid tonight."

"I'm good for it, sir. But I need to oversee the preparations." Tonight's raid was a gift from Hornblower, one last chance to distinguish himself in this war. Bush did not intend to waste it.

"Very well. I'll come see you off tonight."

"Aye aye, sir." Bush leaned down to kiss Hornblower, and the peace of the early hour reigned.

"See you soon, sir."

Bush slipped out the door, finalising his plans for Caudebec.
