part 1: it sounds like what you have is dermatophagia. I do the same thing to my fingers, with both clippers and my teeth, but I don't think as severely as you describe you do (my picking is primarily my chest and face). I would definitely suggest doing a few google searches on both dermatillomania and dermatophagia and seeing if it sounds like what you're dealing with. these plasters will help if you get any infections on your cuticles from tearing the skin too much, but they won't work well
part 2: to really help recent you from doing this. I would suggest throwing out your clippers and buying nail files for your nails, as radical as that may sound. I did it. getting rid of your tools is the first step. if you need someone to talk to about it, you can most definitely send me a message and I really hope that this is the beginning of healing your fingers!! xoxo
I had definitely tried over the years to google and figure out what I had so I could figure out a game plan and never came across these terms so that alone helps!
It does sound like what I have, and I do like your idea of throwing away the clippers. Only problem is I did try that at the beginning of college (wanted a ‘fresh’ start and all that nonsense), and I ended up going back to biting which causes way way way more pain and problems that the clippers. The clippers give me more control on how much I am destroying, y’know?
But I mean, having some terms to look at gives me a lot of help alone. Can do more research and maybe get over it and bring it up with my doctor. He’s a pretty smart guy and probably has tools to help. I just sort of hope at times that I can kick it by myself but y’know.. like 12 years and ongoing of it. It’s pretty much just a stuck habit.
He did suggest to me once that I likely have mild OCD so I did figure that it was part of that and wikipedia says it pretty much is so.. hahah. Oh dear.
