How does it feel to grow up with your feet walking the earth your brother’s blood watered? How does it feel to remember the shape of your brothers’ faces? Reaping crops and herding sheep, the sight of Cain standing in a far off field, wind swaying the golden grains around him. then he is gone from you once again. your parents: adam, his back bending, skin loosening. angry and tired and alone. eve, walking in the forest, long, wrinkled fingers gracing the surface of leaves and bark. feeling for some touch of divinity that is lost to her. the man staring back at you in the reflection of the scythe blade. you were a child. you are not anymore. and on the soft summer wind comes a song, sweet and supple. a man in the grove of figs, lounging against the gnarled roots of an ancient tree. your skin hums with his power. his eyes are dark and flickering; he has seen many things. and you want to know. you want to know.

I don't believe in a physical place called hell, especially like what Dante described. Nor do I believe in a personification of evil Satan/ the Devil / whatever. The idea of God throwing away any of God's beloved children into eternal conscious torture just doesn't fit with the Biblical picture of God who suffers when the people turn away, who says in effect 'I will forget your sins and remember them no more because I am God', who "IS LOVE". That said, Jesus talks about the refiner's Fire and I do believe that we all have to pass through it. I believe that we each have in us things that are not acceptable in the kin-dom of God - lust, rage, hate, and even fear need to be burned away so that we may walk into God's presence and join the feast with the rest of God's people. For some, it is going to be relatively quick and easy, they know their flaws and they want to get rid of them. For others, they will struggle afraid to let go of the ugliness that has defined their lives...I also believe that a hell like (for me) state of separation from God is something that can happen IF you consciously reject God's offer of grace. BUT there is even Good News™ here! In the story of the Man with Two Sons (commonly called the Prodigal Son) Jesus tells us that the unclean, dishonored, winner of a younger son is welcomed back with kiss, calf, robe, and ring; AND his righteous older brother who CHOOSES to stay outside the party (kingdom of God) is begged to come in and reminded that he is an heir and that all dad (God) has is his... hear this clearly: EVEN IF YOU KNOWINGLY REJECT GOD, GOD STILL WANTS TO SAVE YOU (from yourself) AND WON'T GIVE UP ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!If you are interested in a pretty thorough discussion of what the Bible actually says about heaven and hell, I highly recommend Rob Bell's book Love Wins.
