INTERVIEW - Submarine Clothing
Interview with founder Henry Crew
Who? - Henry: Submarine is a t-shirt company for anyone who doesn’t feel catered for by other clothing companies, and wants to change the ethics behind affordable fashion.
Was running a t-shirt company something you've always seen yourself doing? Or was 'Submarine' created solely from aggravation over overexpensive and unethical companies?
H: Not at all! I used to do a lot of art but hadn’t done anything since I began to focus on music. I’ve always had a passion for design/style/art across all mediums from buildings to album covers, but didn’t think it would manifest into this. Submarine literally formed one day when I decided I couldn’t pay £30 for a T-shirt, couldn’t find anything I liked for much less, and couldn’t see how the price tag was justified when they are exploiting the people who manufacture the product in such awful ways.
What inspires and influences you most when you make your products, and with 'Submarine' in general?
H: Screen printing the t-shirts and getting to grips with that medium has been pretty influential - it limits a lot of what you can do in a good way; your designs have to conform to certain rules, so that's been fun but also tricky. I pretty much just design what I would wear and then get feedback on a load of mock ups before printing anything. I would say it has a fair amount of musical influence - more in the branding. I like to think there is a slight air of social commentary, and a bit of humour, but normally I try and hone in on these things after initially drawing something - so I’m not sure it counts as an influence!
You're hosting a music event in Guildford on the 17th of November. Tell us about that and the motivation behind it.
H: In the same way I felt un-catered for by fashion, I felt that Guildford neglects its musical potential, and this feeling was shared by a few of my friends, so we decided to put on a night and see if anyone felt the same! We had been to some Cat from Japan nights last year and felt that what they were doing was getting close to what we wanted, so when they stopped we thought we would try and fill their shoes. Basically we want to put on great bands, with great local support acts, and then get everyone really drunk to a soundtrack of indie anthems and the best old school dance/club music.
What has been your best/most memorable experience with Submarine so far?
H: Getting the first design printed was pretty momentous! It was such a great feeling after months of struggling with printing - that's probably the best, and struggling with screen printing is probably the worst and most memorable!
What do you hope to achieve for the rest of the year and for 2015?
H: Hopefully we will get some cool products out over Christmas. We are experimenting with some cool accessories at the moment! As for 2015 we should have new t-shirt designs by January, and then we are hoping to continue with live nights and integrate more music into what we do.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start in the same field?
H: Make a timeline and then estimate everything will take five times longer than you planned. Also screen printing everything yourself is so much more work - it’s rewarding, but it did take us about six months to get up to speed!
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
H: We also do third party printing for bands etc specialising in low quantity orders, and offer design work if needed, and if anyone thinks they have an act that would fit in on one of our nights we would love to hear from them! They can send an email to [email protected] and we will take a look.
