Assam Elections 2026: Can JMMтАЩs Tea Tribe Strategy Turn 16 Seats into Kingmaker Power?
The Assam Assembly Elections 2026 have introduced an unexpected player into the political arena тАФ Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Contesting in the state for the first time, the party has fielded 16 candidates after adopting a bold тАЬgo soloтАЭ strategy when alliance talks with Congress failed.
At the heart of JMMтАЩs campaign lies a focused push toward AssamтАЩs tea tribe community тАФ a massive voter base of nearly 70 lakh people with roots in Jharkhand. By raising the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, Hemant Soren has tapped into a deeply emotional and socio-political issue that could influence voting patterns.
Despite setbacks like rejected nominations, JMM remains hopeful of making a mark. While not a frontrunner for power, the party could emerge as a crucial kingmaker if the results lead to a hung assembly.
This election could also mark JMMтАЩs first serious step toward national expansion, especially in the Northeast.
