"He (Øystein) loved speaking to the rest of us about Pelle as if he were a strange and mysterious person. He would go on for hours about how extraordinary and exceptional Pelle was. That was part of the mythology he built around him. But the real Pelle, who I also saw a bit of, was clearly a troubled person." - Anders Odden, "Helvete: Historien om Norsk black metal" documentary 🦇

Helvete
Helvete (Norwegian for “Hell”) was a legendary record store in Oslo that played a significant role in the birth and rise of Norwegian black metal. The shop was founded in June 1991 by Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth, guitarist of the band Mayhem. Located at Schweigaards gate 56, Helvete quickly became the spiritual and cultural center of the movement a place where music, ideology, and friendship merged.
Helvete was more than just a record store; it served as a meeting point for those involved in the so-called Black Metal Inner Circle a loosely organized community united by anti-Christian sentiment, misanthropy, and a devotion to extreme music. The store’s basement, painted black and decorated with medieval weapons and band posters, became the headquarters for bands like Mayhem, Burzum, Emperor, Darkthrone, and others. It was a space where demos were exchanged, people lived, projects were planned and a shared vision was developed.
In the early 1990s, black metal became engulfed in a series of scandals: church arsons, violent assaults, and ultimately the murder of Euronymous in 1993 by Varg Vikernes. Due to these events and pressure from authorities, Helvete was shut down, but its influence did not disappear.
In 2013, the legacy of Helvete was revived when Neseblod Records moved into the same location (or nearby). Today, Neseblod functions both as a record store and a living museum, where visitors can explore the original basement space, admire rarities such as first pressings of Mayhem’s Deathcrush EP, 1990s demo tapes, and vintage merchandise. Black metal fans from around the world continue to visit the shop often referred to jokingly as “blackpackers.”
In 2024, Neseblod suffered a major setback when an electrical fault caused a fire in the basement, resulting in significant damage. A portion of the historical collection was destroyed, but the upper floors have since reopened, and restoration of the basement is ongoing. The community has actively supported the rebuilding effort, including through crowdfunding.
Helvete is not just a place it is a symbol. It represents the original power, community, and rebellion of the movement. Today, it serves as both a cultural shrine and a treasure trove of musical rarities. If you’re in Oslo and interested in black metal or subcultural history, Helvete/Neseblod is a must visit.
Yhteisö on tukenut jälleenrakennusta aktiivisesti esimerkiksi joukkorahoituksella.
