Batober day 2: spotlight
For some reason this made me think of dancing, so I decided to draw dickbabs at a gala. Again, was feeling last, so I used a base from online. Choose to do the second couple as Jason and Helena, because why wouldn’t I?
At the time I didn’t have references for suits, so I just decided to draw the boys in costume. (Why I didn’t do the same for the girls I don’t know.)
So to justify this slightly weird drawling: The Batfam was invited to the police gala. Obviously Babs had to go with her dad, so no Batgirl. (Why no , Huntress? I don’t know. It just happened that way.) it just ended up that all the boys (minus Bruce) are in costume, and the girl wore gowns.

Little Sister- Reader as Jason’s Younger sister
Last night I had this entire dream about me being Jason’s little sister. It was pretty good so I had to write it down. I did leave out a little since this was getting pretty long.
“How do I look, Pet?” Jason asks.
You hum and smoothe out his tux another time. “Smashing.”
“Are you just saying that?” He runs his fingers through his hair, earning a growl as he ruined your hard work.
With an exasperated sigh, you grab the hair gel.
“Really, Jason?” You tut.
“Leave it. Please.” He begs softly.
You nod and run your hands through his hair, coaxing it to stand. His eyes fell closed. He sighed.
“There’s no need to be nervous.” You reassure, tucking a sprig of Baby’s Breath into his pocket. “It’s just Helena.”
“I know, but…” His voice trails off, and for the first time, your brother seems scared.
He crosses to the window. As he pulls back the curtain, you catch a glimpse at the falling snow.
“This isn’t how I imagined this.” He whispers. “I thought we would elope. No fuss. No big ceremony. Just Helena and I.”
“It’ll be just as special.” You promise.
“I hope so.”
He pulls his shoulders up from their saging position. “Hey, Pet,” He starts, irling towards you. “How about you sneak a glance at Helena’s dress for me?”
“No way.” You chuckle. “You’ll have to wait.”
He laughs, and gently pats your head. You twist away.
“My hair! Jason!” You practically whine.
He laughs harder, the sound chasing away his fearful expression.
Your eyes land on the clock. “It’s time, Jay.”
His face freezes into it’s nervous state again. You push the door open. He freezes.
“Jay?”
His chest pounds with quickened breaths. You dart to him. You take his shaking hands into yours.
“Come on. You don’t want to miss her walk down the aisle.” He shakes harder. Standing on your tip-toes you whisper into his ear. “She looks beautiful.”
He nods, and still trembling follows you. You lead him up the side stairs. In front of the packed room, full of family and friends, you position your brother. The chapel is beautiful. Helena had insisted on being married here, where she reconnected with her faith, and where Jason found his.
“You’ll be fine.” You reassure, giving him a tight hug.
“Y/n,” His green eyes lock on yours. “I want you up here with me. I know you're not a boy, but will you be my bestman? After all you’re my favorite person, not counting Helena of course.”
You chuckle softly. “Of course.”
You smooth out your dark navy dress and take your place beside him. Dick gives you a smile from his place as a groomsman. With the moment of quiet you can see how your dress matches his tux. You hold back a giggle, suddenly realizing why he had insisted that you wear this color. The music starts. Jason tenses. The doors swing open. Barbara and Dinah lead. Their matching pale blue dresses sways with each step. Their hair is curled into matching styles. Jason gives a sigh. Helena comes into view. She seems as nervous as him. Her head is ducked slightly, even though she holds herself erect. The white dress trails behind her for nearly five feet. The base fabric ends in a sweetheart neckline, but the lace trails up her coller and down her arms. Her white and silver bouquet is clustered close to her. The petals shake with her trembling fingers. Jason’s eyes soften as he watches her. You take her bouquet as she reaches the altar. Jason’s hands visibly shake as he takes Helena’s.
The part I mentioned leaving out was that at the end of the dream, I danced with Jason. But I was so short that I could barely put a hand on his shoulder. 😰
What We Almost Had
Jason felt something off, the moment he stepped through the door. Delicious scents filled the apartment. Baked goods covered every inch of the coffee table. Paper bags were strewn across the couch. He grabbed one. ‘Pumpkin Spice’ was scribbled across it in Helena’s handwriting. Homemade coffee grounds. That was out of Helena’s usual cooking premise. Her voice resounded in a yelp.
“Helena?” Jason skidded around the corner.
She was flipping her wrist around. The pot spat out oil. She was burned. He caught her. Jason grabbed ice, and pressed it to the wound. He slapped a lid on the pot, and crabbled Helena.
“Are you okay?”
She gave no response, only burrowed into his arms.
“What’s wrong?”
Again, nothing.
“Helena,” He dropped to his knees. She leaned into the hand on her cheek, but refused eye contact.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Her voice was heavy.
She crossed back to the spitting pot. She deftly removed fried chicken. Jason’s stomach roared.
“There’re tortillas on the counter.” Her voice was flat.
He jumped toward the plate. All was forgotten in the rush to stuff as many of the hot homemade tortillas down as possible. Sauce trailing down his chin, Jason sighed. Usually, Helena would cross the room, lovingly whip his chin, and tell him he was such a pig. Instead she just stood over the stove. He again asked what was wrong. Everytime, she stayed silent.
“Helena.” He slipped both arms around her.
Her stirring hand stilled.
“Please, tell me.”
“I-I lost her.” Her voice was liaden with tears.
“Lost who?” A birds of prey member? A friend? Her mother? Some long lost relative? “Lost who, Helena?” His voice was hard, and she only sobbed more.
“Our- Our- Our…” She choked on tears. “I was going to tell you tonight....”
“Tell me what?”
“After… I lost her…”
“Who?” He forced her to look at him. He tried to subdue the rising anger, but couldn’t keep it from his eyes.
“Our.. Our daughter.”
“What?” His hands fell to his sides.
“I was going to tell you tonight, after I went in for ultrasounds, but…” She fell into him. “But, I lost her.”
Shock vibrated through him. Helena was, no, had been pregnant. He clutched her. Sobs shook her whole body. He sank to the floor, pushed down by grief. Worse than this new type of pain, was Helena’s sobbing. She had been pregnant. It played through his head on repeat. They had lost their daughter. A daughter. His baby girl. The moment he knew of her, she had been snacthed away. A whole future, just gone. A world of possibilities that would never happen.
“Baby.” He stroked Helena’s head.
She just sobbed harder. Something warm tricked down his cheek. A single tear, hot with pain.

How We Died and How We Live
Helena tossed her bag onto the table with a sigh. Grading had taken longer than usual, and with parent/teacher conferences as well, she was home extremely late. She was too tired to bother with a shower. Jason lifted his head as she entered the room. He gave a small rumble. She gave no acknowledgment, and crawled into bed.
“Hey.” He mumbled, slipping both arms around her.
“No.” She squirmed away. “I don’t want to cuddle.”
“Okay.” His response surprised her.
Helena gave him a grateful smile, and buried her face into the pillow. She sighed multiple times, almost with every breath. Why did teaching have to be this difficult? She loved all of her kids, but that boy Reese, he was nothing but trouble. Never participating, and always acting up. His parents thought he was a complete angel. He might have been at home, but at school, he was a menace. A menace, who she had to teach history to everyday. Warm skin pressed into her back. Soft hair tickles her neck.
“What are you doing?”
“Not cuddling you.” She can almost see his smirk.
“Fine.”
Worse than Reese’s interruptions, was that his parents refused to see it. And they gave her the snake down for not being inclusive of Reese’s needs. They acted as if none of the other kids mattered. After a little, Jason rolled over. One arm draped over her abdomen. His nose pressed into the flesh by her spine. She leaned away, curling both arms around her pillow. His hand slipped to her back.
“I love you.” Jason whispered into her shoulder.
Helena smiled. She turned her head to see his face, and it sunk into the pillow, nearly obscuring her vision. He was lazily propped up next to her. His eyes were heavy with sleep, but trained on her. A large, calloused hand brushed raven hair from her face.
“I love you, Helena Bertienlli-Todd-Wayne.”
She laughed. The corners of his mouth turned up.
“I still can’t believe you chose that.” He chuckled.
“I was going for Bertienlli-Todd. Then you decide to tack Wayne onto your name. What was I supposed to do?”
He wriggled his hand into hers. “Just Helena Todd-Wayne.”
“And throw away my past?” Her eyebrows arched high.”No way. You know how much my heritage means to me.”
“I do.”
She could never let herself forget where she came from. Her past, her family, they’re what defined her. She could never forget the gunshots that killed her family. She could never forget how their crimson blood spilled across the dining room’s hardwood floor. She could never forget, or truly let go, of the anger that drove her to become Huntress. The memories of St. Hardrian’s Finishing School, the place where she toned her abilities and discovered her love of teaching. But of any memory she clung to it was her family. Discovering her mother’s survival, the community she found among The Birds of Prey, and most of all Jason.
She could still remember the first time they touched more than just their hands brushing as they passed tools to each other. Though that contact had become more frequent, and purposeful. She had found him brooding. His eyes had held a terrifying darkness. She had said nothing, simply laid a hand on his shoulder. His eyes had met hers with a never seen before expression. She had found herself compelled toward him. Their eyes became locked for barely half a second, before their lips had joined. Jason had swept her off her feet, and brought her close to him. Helena’s arms had found their way around his neck. Their mouths had melded into one, in a long withheld tsunami of passion. He had whispered not a word, but his outburst of affection had been enough to say everything.
“I love you.” Jason sighed one last time. “I’m always here for you.”
“I know.”
“Good.” He moved close to her.
His arms wrigiled under her, and soon where wrapped around her waist. He pressed his head into her back. Helena smiled into her pillow. She would never let herself forget this.
Law of the Land
Jason found himself trying to justify why he never told anyone about Helena. Because they would tell me I’m not ready, he reasoned. Tim and Damien would question his choice. The Birds of question Helena’s. Bruce and Dick, well everyone, would say he wasn’t ready for marriage.
“F-” He started.
Helena shot him a glare at the first letter.
“Sorry.” He muttered.
“You’re trying.” She praised.
He sighed, as her fingers trailed through his hair. Helena hummed softly. She shut her laptop with a small thump. Jason perked up.
“I need tea.”
He groaned. “More grading?”
She nodded. “Sorry, Short Stack. I need to get this done tonight.”
“Hey!”
She gave a gentle laugh, and carried over two mugs. He eagerly took one from her.
“Don’t you have patrol tonight?”
“Oracle hasn’t connected me.” He snuggled closer to her side.
“That’s because your comms are off.” She stated with a knowing smirk.
“They're not.”
“Mmmmmhmmmm.”
He whined, and pressed his head to her shoulder. Helena chuckled. Jason relished how her chest rumbled with her laughter. She lazily petted him. His back arched into her hand. Slowly, he inched closer to her, until he was halfway in her lap. That earned another joyful laugh.
“Helena?” A knock came at the door.
“It’s unlocked.”
The door clicked open behind them. Jason gave a muffled sigh. Footsteps echoed through the hallway and into the main room.
“Sorry for barging in, Helena. I was wondering if you had anything o-” Barbara’s voice fell flat.
He met her gaze, silently challenging her to say anything.
“On?” Helena repeated, opening her personal files.
“Harris Sutton.” Barbara’s eye contact never broke from Jason’s.
Something popped on from the search. Helena pursed her lips as she read through. Jason tightened his grasp around her. She patted his head soothingly. He wasn’t about to be soothed.
“There’s quite a bit on him. I’ll send you the file.” She doesn’t even look up.
Jason can’t tell if she isn’t aware of the situation, or merely choosing not to intervene.
“What’s going on?” Barbara’s tone softens as she takes the seat across from them
“Nothing out of the ordinary.” Jason starkly replies.
“Just enjoying our evening.” Helena shut down her laptop.
Babara raised an eyebrow. “You’re dating?”
“No.”
“Jason, don’t give her the run around.” Helena chided softly. “We’re married.” She says it so simply, that it’s impossible to miss.
“For how long?” It’s just like Barbara to skip the surprised phase. Straight to facts.
“About a month and a half.”
Jason buried his face back into Helena's neck, and blocked out the rest of the conversion. He focused on the rumble of her throat, and her gentle breaths. The feeling of her hair tickling his face, and her warm hand on his shoulder.
