While I love LotR and very much enjoyed rewatching all 3 extended editions in the recent cinema release, it is eternally funny to me that they suited up the 80 year old men and 12 year old boys to defend Helm's Deep before they considered that any adult, presumably able-bodied, woman might be willing to throw down.
Theoden, my guy, your situation is dire put your niece on the wall and watch her tear that shit up. Release the repressed rage and farming strength of Rohan's peasant women.
The film is a product of its time, yes, but I cannot see how even in Universe Theoden thought a woman would make a less effective combatant than a child who has also never held a sword.
