rewatching episodes (The Angels Take Manhattan this time) always hits because what do you mean it is usually the death of one's child that drives a couple apart and in this scenario, it was her parents' death that drove them apart.
we do know that they traveled together for a bit but the next time we see them, the Doctor has donned what feels like a mourning garb and has turned his back on the universe while River is off recklessly doing space Robin Hood quests left and right, desperately trying to bury her grief.
I've said this before and I'll say it again. you can't watch The Husbands of River Song without connecting it back to the events that happened in The Angels Take Manhattan.
"The Doctor does not and has never loved me" has been taken at face value by so many and so much that it jars me when I am reminded by that reality.
