Dear bump, Today I am 9 weeks and 1 day pregnant with you. I know this because we had it confirmed by an emergency ultrasound the other day. Your Daddy took me to the hospital on Monday morning because I’d been having pain in the left side of my womb for a few weeks, and on Sunday night it really got me worried. I was worried that you were growing in the wrong place, or that you weren’t doing so well at all. But you’re doing just fine; during the scan we saw you lay on your back relaxing, your heart beating rapidly. Daddy said he saw you move your head! We shed a few tears of relief when we saw you and that you were ok. We found out that I was pregnant with you on Tuesday the 2nd September 2015 at around 5:30pm. You were planned, but we couldn’t believe how quickly you joined us! I woke up that morning, sat up in bed and just knew you were there. I cannot explain the feeling. I picked up my phone and sent a text to Daddy, telling him that I was going to go and buy a better pregnancy test. A ‘Clearblue Digital’ one to be exact, as it was easier for me to get the definite answer I wanted. Daddy came home from work later that day and we went straight into the bathroom together to do the pregnancy test. A few minutes went by as we nervously watched the screen on the test stick, and then there it was. “Pregnant. 1-2 weeks”. I looked at your Daddy and yelled “I knew it! I absolutely knew it!” and threw my arms around him. He was just in shock. “Is it real? Is this real?” he asked me. I told him that it was, and he was over the moon. I rang my GP right away and told them the news, and the receptionist said congratulations and booked me in for a ‘first visit’ appointment with the midwife. We were, and still are, unbelievably happy and can’t wait to meet you. We had to keep you a secret for a little while, but I had to tell the other nurses at work the week after as I didn’t want to harm you by lifting heavy patients, using harsh cleaning chemicals or pushing heavy beds around. When I was 6-7 weeks pregnant with you, I started feeling very sick. I was working night shifts and having a really hard time eating anything at all, which isn’t like me! I cried at one point when I got into bed after a night shift as I just wanted to be sick, but I couldn’t. This is when I realised that it shouldn’t be called ‘morning sickness’ as the nausea is all day, not just in the morning! I feel very sick today too. I also feel exhausted, more exhausted than I ever have been in my life, but it’s all worth it. We told your grandad Roy, Lola, Dido, Oksana (your Dido’s girlfriend), uncle Steven, auntie Leah and auntie Krystyna about you on Friday 2nd October. They all thought they were just coming round for food and drinks for Daddy’s birthday, but really it was to surprise them with the news that I was pregnant! Everyone was so surprised and excited. Auntie Krystyna cried. We showed them the first baby outfit we’d bought for you. Your grandad Roy and Lola are very excited to meet you - Grandad checks up on me everyday to make sure I’m ok. He found it funny when I told him that we saw you in a scan and you were having a lie down! He couldn’t help telling your great-grandma Teresa I was pregnant the day after he found out (I was supposed to tell her myself but he was too excited to keep it to himself!) Your 12 week scan is on the 26th October and we can’t wait to see you again. Hopefully you’ll be doing a little dance for us this time? Mummy likes dancing so I hope you give it a go too. Soon we’ll be sharing the news of you with your Nonna, her husband Mick, Bisnonna and Great-Dido (I’m yet to learn what great-grandfather is in Ukrainian!) Tonight we’re going to an expectant parent event at Mothercare to learn a few things about looking after you. Hopefully we’ll be coming home with a few little things for you!
