Halloween Horror Series: Day 30
Hell Night (1981) dir. Tom DeSimone
🎃🖤 October Horror Appreciation🖤🎃
👻😱👻Hell Night👻😱👻
Hell Night is a 1981 horror film starring Linda Blair. It's an interesting blend of classic haunted house horror as well as slasher elements that were begining to boom in early 80s horror. Hell Night takes place during a fraternity and sororities' "Hell Night" in which they haze a handful of new pledges by having them spend the night in a "haunted mansion". Director Tom De Simone wanted a gothic and classic feel which is why Hell Night takes place at a costume party as well. It does add to the spooky haunted feel that the movie leads us into.
Our four lead pledges are driven out to the old Garth Manor just outside of town. It's an abandoned mansion where a man named Ramon Garth murdered his wife and three deformed children. There was a fourth son Andrew that was never found and legend is Andrew still lurks there waiting for trespassers. With that creepy story in their heads the four pledges are left at the manor alone to survive the night.
Soon after trying to pass the time the pledges begin being tortured and scared by obvious recorded screams and rattling chains. They figured the gazing had begun and search for all the trick the fraternity set up in the manor. While not quite possibly everything is a trick though as our final girl Marti, played by Linda Blair finds out.
It's not long before our cast becomes fodder for what turns into a more of an 80s style slasher movie. The fraternity leaders in charge of scaring the pledges, as well as the pledges themselves, begin being picked off in a violent manner.
We find that Andrew Garth is real along with a brother that actually survived the father's attempt at murdering the whole Garth family. The remaining Garth brothers have become feral monsters haunting the manor. Complete with underground tunnels that host a dead Garth family dinner setup that even the Sawyer family would enjoy.
Hell Night is one of my favourite 80s b movies. I love Linda Blair and I enjoyed the whole cast. The blend of gothic horror and slasher was neat in my opinion. It leads one way and steers the other while still having a creepy surrounding location.
