Analysis through Ethan Chandler's infatuation with her.

In "Fresh Hell" Penny Dreadful opens with Vanessa Ives walking alone in the park. Personally, how I love this scene! It shows Vanessa's true nature, one that is not dark or light, but just is, because  it exists. And it's in a way the qualities that bring Vanessa Ives closer to witchcraft, even though she's not a spell-making witch mixing ingredients in a kettle, while she turns her face green and jumps into covens with her broom.

None of that, true witchcraft is the power of fascination, of suggestion that the witch exercises on others, which Vanessa Ives does.

Loneliness, and Vanessa Ives feeling complacent with it, away from others, whom she observes happily, because she knows she is special and different, is the first point.

Vanessa's smile is proof of that. She knows her power, what she awakens in others, as she already demonstrated with Mina's fiancé, Mr. Harker, as she did with Dorian, and as she does even more painfully with Mr. Chandler, whom she attracts and despises over and over again. again in a way.

The elements of nature as witnesses, the second point of her witchcraft.

          Vanessa Ives is equally pleased with the elements, observes and analyzes them, her walks in solitude demonstrate the voluntary isolation that she possesses, which only increases her own personal power, the realization that she is a whole by herself, that nature is there, as an expression of her presence when and that she can alter it.

                                    The link is resounding. Nor is she immune to the suggestion of another witch, in this case Evelyn appears very early to show us to what extent those same elements are manipulated by her to harm Ives, who defends herself against her. Third confirmation.

Marvelous perception. Two witches showing that. 

Vanessa Ives is not a good witch and Evelyn a very bad one. Both exercise two different witchcraft. Evelyn is a method witch, Ives is a mental one.

Ethan at the same time, also feels the force of the elements, but in this case, the consequences, as they are affected by something that he possesses in himself dark and monstrous, but of which he has no idea yet, except that it causes ruin .

A ruin that is nothing else, but the chronicle of a situation previously announced at its destination.

Fate by neccesity not by himself , that force that will lead him to Vanessa again, in an attempt to hope to understand what is happening, or to justify himself not to leave England, which is what Ethan feels he should do.

Upon entering Vanessa's carriage and being attacked by three other witches, Evelyn's servants, Ethan will see Vanessa's true nature as a witch in a way he has never seen before.

Observation. Etha will see Vanessa's fight , her victory over one of the three attacking witches. It is something supernatural about something supernatural. Two natures in conflict.

Ethan sees at the same time that Vanessa's strength, her languor, her faintness and weakness, her figure like that of a damsel in distress who at the same time knows how to defend herself when is a matter of faith but  who needs him, for her survival, when is a matter of violence. 

Vanessa is in pain, Vanessa suffers in an endless way. Ethan knows it. 

But he´s in pain too. First for her wolf´s condiction hidden yet, and second for his unrequited love for her. Vanessa represents for Ethan in this point the pain of his unsatisfied desire

The entire Ethan Chandler conflict over Vanessa Ives escalates. To his particular infatuation with her, now we must add an urgency. The desperate curiosity that she arouses in him, Ethan wants to see what Vanessa and her power can unleash, including him, he wants to lose himself in her darkness, or in her light.  It is too late for more consequences.

Vanessa is vulnerable, but fascinating. She´s that witch who needs his company around her, but who denny to him his salvation. 

Vanessa and the events experienced with Ethan and in private have awakened her suggestive abilities more and more, and with it Ethan's respect and obsession for her, who only stays to be by her side.

But of course, the witch knows it. 

Thus the figure of Vanessa darkens at the end of this episode,  and not a little, but a lot. She enjoys. And here is the ultimate quality of her as a witch and what defines her as such. The enjoyment of seeing how others fall into her game.
