i think taz royale is up to some slightly multiverse shenanigans. what really made it clear to me was during the trial of evocation. travis / rictus tried to attack the titanic with an iceberg. and griffin made him roll a check to realize that he has no memory of the titanic himself. but somewhere one of the spells he’s got and it’s subsequent soul who owns it does. leading me to believe not everyone is from the same world.
i’m thinking mb it’s the higher level spells. at least for the most part. like we got small montages for some of the lvl 1 spells but no explanation for lvl 2 or above. another example being the Gentleman from Wisbury. since everyone else starts with only a 1st level spell, how does he have a 9th? and it’s one that bends the fabric of reality to work. so what i’m thinking is this universe, only first level spells and cantrips can happen naturally. but through stealing the souls of those from other realities the octave is able to amass more power.
that’s what’s inside the crystalarium. we know it’s more biological motes as hellgrammite puts it.
that’s also what the whole competition is for. i don’t think anyone is going to actually make it on to the octave. its more so a ploy to get 64 magic users souls for their own gain. and have some plausible deniability or smth. or mb the souls from this world have to be willing. and this is a way of tricking them into being willing.
