One thing I like about the Peter F. Hamilton Exodus book (given that the game is being positioned as a successor to Mass Effect) is that it's relatively hard (no FTL, all "aliens" are modified humans, long timespans), even when you factor in the "space magic".
I thought that the 40-year timespan really worked in the story's favor (for scale: one character is born at the start of the book and is a major political power at the end, another is 38 years younger than his twin sister due to time dilation)
Considering that ME1 was my favorite because it generally felt more like hard SF than generic space opera, this seems promising for the game.
