Good End:
You find yourself back in your room, back into a situation that's become more than a little frequent. You lie in bed by his side, fingers absently playing with locks of soft and curly hair, sunlight barely peeking through the window.
He hums in appreciation, always glancing your way; it's like he can't miss a second of whatever you do, even if it's the simple act of breathing.
'We've had a lovely share of days,' he starts, as sudden and quiet as always, 'But I should remind you that it's not always going to be like this.'
[Why not?]
'...You know why.'
Sadly, you do. But on the other hand, you're stubborn and determined and willing to gamble on the future-- you're infinitely afraid of it, but it doesn't seem as bad if you get to spend it in company. In love.
At that moment, you decide that you're going to make this last. You'll see it trough, no matter how soon or not it'll end. You'll make it last.
So you bring him closer, ignoring the sad trail of the banter he intended to start. He's warmer than usual, if only a little bit lukewarm, and you tell him so. He has a hard time believing you, almost doesn't, but when he does, he smiles with that real smile of his. The one that doesn't seem as practiced, the calm one, the one that dusts his cheeks with color. He doesn't look as happy as he does relaxed, and the fact that you think-- no, you know-- you're the only one who's ever seen this expression makes you smile to yourself.
You tell him you love him, and with the way his smile deepens, you think how you want every following day to start just like this.

Bad end:
When he explained the real dreadfulness of his situation-- and to an extent, yours--, he gave you a choice. But it didn't feel like it; not when the way everything broke down told you only two important things:
He was dying.
It was your fault that he was currently getting worse.
So taking his word for it... It was the right and only choice to walk away, wasn't it? It was for his own good. It was for a general good... he could get better if you weren't there. Even if he loved you, and even if you loved him back, that affection was only making things worse. And as a plus, you'd get out of that lethal situation you were surely in, and you'd be heeding his request, and everyone'd win.
...Right?
You've seen illnesses for all your life, and you know how some tend to work themselves out, so...time could fix this. If you could simply stay away for enough time for him to get better, maybe things could start over. Maybe you'd find each other and get back that happiness you'd both found on each other, and the world would be right again.
Just as weeks turn to the loneliest pair of months you've ever lived, you suddenly receive a call in the middle of the night.
Confused, you decide to pick up the phone, secretly hoping that it could be--
Nanami?
[ ....Hello? ]
The first thing she says is 'Nagito-kun...', and right there-- right there, your mouth goes dry, and your eyes wide.
He kept telling me not to tell you about how he was interned at the hospital---
I wanted to call, I really did, but I couldn't betray him--
But it's too late now and I'm so so sorry, because he's--
You catch even fewer sentences after that, only speaking to ask monosylabic questions: When? How?
You thank her in a monotone when she's done, and you're left alone with your thoughts.
The cycle couldn't be defeated.
Even with all the two of you had risked and attempted. Even with distance... Nothing could've worked, because Komaeda was doomed from the start. The realizations hit you all at once, like slaps, and you want to scream and cry all at once because it's so fucking unfair that this still happened and because he deserved better and because you were so stupid and because you didn't see this coming even when you should've...
But most of all, what makes you feel like that?
You weren't there at the end.
