Theology Thursday: Proverbs This week my group study in Proverbs was on good words, usually a favorite of mine, but I was distracted by how many Proverbs verses include various body parts; tongue, lips, ear, bones. Naturally I was drawn into Psalm 119 to see if my favorite teaching Psalm has a similar sprinkling of body part words and it does. Eyes, mouth, hands, feet, flesh, face, even grey hair turn up with regularity, scattered throughout Psalms and Proverbs like beading on a tapestry! The one I noticed most frequently in Psalm 119, a dozen times at least, is 'heart' and one of my favorite heart verses is Psalm 119:11; "I have laid up thy word in my heart that I might not sin against thee." The Hebrew word for heart, לבב transliterated 'la-bub ' to me sounds like a heartbeat, so it is easy to remember. Following the verse into the Septuagint shows us the Greek word for heart, καρδιά transliterated 'cardia', also pretty easy to remember because of its medical usage. Both Hebrew and Greek words are so heavily used (hundreds of times) that they appear in beginning language vocabulary lists. Did you notice (as I just did) that this verse answers my question from last week about how to keep my feet from evil? We keep our feet from evil by filling our hearts with the word of the LORD! Let's do it!
