When a book (or in this case, series) gets a lot of hype, it can go one of two ways for me. Either I jump aboard that hype train or I avoid it like the plague and it was the latter case for Heartstopper and me. I think it was a mixture of not believing I was the target audience to not understanding how beautiful these characters actually are and what an effect it would have. Nick is an openly gay teenager who has been bullied in the past and is going through a difficult time. He meets Nick, a friendly, rugby playing boy in the year above and begins to fall for him. He doesn’t believe his feelings could ever be reciprocated but then their relationship deepens. I managed to polish off all four of the Heartstopper graphic novels and the accompanying Netflix series in one weekend thanks to @chrissireads my sister, who was also kind enough to take this picture for me. I was honestly blown away. It wasn’t long into the first book that I felt that heartwarming, fuzzy feeling that comes round so rarely but instantly makes you want to hug not only the book but everyone around it! There are a lot of reasons why this series works so, so well and why it has had the colossal impact on readers, even encouraging non readers to pick up the series. Firstly, with everything happening in the world right now, it’s a pocket of wholesome goodness and presents a blossoming gay relationship in an authentic and believable way. The illustrations are gorgeously drawn, to the point where you really can feel the emotions through the pages. Lastly, it has the strength to present difficult topics in a very informative and sensitive way which I can only hope will help others who are struggling. This series is perfection - I’m fully obsessed, invested and in love with Nick, Charlie, all their friends (don’t forgot the dog! 😍) and the world Alice Oseman has created.
