“Let me get this straight,” Five rubs at his temple to ease the dull, pulsing ache in the side of his head — Klaus has a tendency to spout off some pretty crazy shit whenever the urge strikes him (which is, apparently, all the goddamn time) but this has got to take the cake in terms of sheer insanity and general triviality. “You are a man in his thirties, and you are still hung up on which one of us Dad liked best? And here I thought that was Diego’s shtick.”
All right, Five can admit that the old man’s little red book, chock-full of data and statistics on himself and his siblings, has been... startlingly and unexpectedly complimentary when it comes to him — while his fellow subjects lag far behind, Number Five continues to make rapid progress and in both academics and athletics, Number Five consistently outstrips the others and Number Five exhibits not only an admirable ambition and thirst for knowledge, but the intensity and diligence required to achieve his goals besides — but it’s always tempered with some scathing remark about his reckless bouts of rebellion, his stubborn pride, his consistent overestimation of his own importance and abilities, and Five seriously cannot even begin to imagine what makes Klaus think Reginald liked him any better than his siblings.
He flips about a dozen pages farther, until he reaches a string of entries from 2002 — he already read through the whole thing back when Viktor still needed twice-weekly training sessions to help him get the hang of his apocalyptic powers, and though he’s always skimmed over the sections on himself, this particular one burned itself into his brain like a brand from the second he saw it — and jabs a finger sharply at the one marked November 17.
“Look at this one. See? No great loss. Hate to break it to you, Klaus, but none of us were ever the favorite. Get over it.”
