Ā Ā Ā HOW TO EXPLAIN the mingling sensation of relief, and shame?Ā was it possible for those feelings to co - exist?Ā he wants to be kind, and to give nina good news, to talk about a cheerful and loving reunion amidst all the viciousness theyād been subjected to in these last few weeks.Ā but she asks so wistfully, jesper canāt help but wonder if itās his father sheās curious about, or just the existenceĀ of a loving parent.
Ā Ā Ā jesper scoots over to make more room for her on the dry part of the ground, casually looping an arm across her shoulders as he does.Ā sheās never felt frail to him before ā the word just didnāt suit nina ā but her run - in with paremĀ has him concerned for her.Ā as concerned as the others, though nina would have shrugged it off, buried it deep where they couldnāt hound her about it.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā ā yeah . . . he certainly is, āĀ jesper exhales, hard, and waits for the little knot of tension and nausea in his gut to loosen.Ā he counts down with the exhale, reaching eight seconds and stopping there to hold his breath.Ā the airlessness doesnāt help, and he wonders if nina can sense his ill ease from so close beside him.Ā how to explain this?Ā how to say i wish he wasnāt here without sounding like the worst son in history?
Ā Ā Ā the treacherous, sharp part of his brain tells him, whoās to say you arenāt already the worst son in history?Ā youāre certainly trying your hardest to earn that title like this.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā ā it was nice to see him, nina.Ā it was.Ā but not like this, āĀ inhaling deeply now, jesper closes his eyes and tilts his head back until it bumps the wall.Ā Ā ā not in the middle of all this mess.Ā i had a plan for our next meeting ā after weād gotten our money from this saints damned heist . . . i was going to surprise him at home.Ā i was going to buy him a house here, in ketterdam, so he could visit whenever he wanted.Ā i was ā going to save the farm, hire people to work the land so he could retire, āĀ and . . . none of that happened.Ā instead colm was greeted by his sonās deceit, and ā the universe had a sickĀ sense of humour for this ā there was a risk of jesper losing colm in the middle of it all.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā ā that sounds ungrateful, doesnāt it?Ā i know iām lucky to have a father whoād come looking for me at all.Ā i just . . . āĀ wish he hadnāt.Ā Ā ā i donāt know.Ā how would you feel, if it were you? ā
