This isn't as happy and perky as some of Ms L’s dances, as it was a grief dance from when my father died last year. We had an enormously complex relationship, and not an easy one -- so there is love and rage and pain and back to love again.Â
Not my usual fun, joyous, fluffy dance.
I used to grieve and cry in the morning, then escape in the afternoon to my favourite cafe. They play 50's and 60's music which was the backdrop to my childhood and teenage years. Breka is my Tardis, and I time-travel. One minute I'm 4, the next 12, the third 16, and back again. Each age has a family memory.
When it became too intense, I would dance. Loved it, as it transformed grief and pain and moved them out of my body. Movement heals.
Feeling it, revealing it, then healing it.
Once, a young man said, "You're an artist. This should be on YouTube." Wow. That stunned me. A couple of people saw the story behind the dance and commented, "I think my family is your family." That I loved. To tell a story in movement, and have it seen.
And isn't that what we all want, to have our story seen? And appreciated.
By having the courage to dance my grief, people truly saw and understood it -- and their comments and support helped to heal it. Â The circle of life. Â Â
