After they left I just sat there. Thinking. Thinking about what I said, and how over confident I was about the entire situation. He was right, I am just a kid. Isn’t that what Jacob referred to me as? I knew that sometimes I thought as an adult way too much. I really didn’t want to be a kid, nor a teen ager. I just wanted it to all be over and I could be an adult, and have control over my life. Instead, here I was in a new town, with no friends, no father anymore for all intents and purposes and acting like...who knows what I was acting like or what I was thinking.
Just as I was about to finally get up and head back to what was now my home, I heard a familiar voice.
CASSANDRA- “Hey, pretty boy? Why the long face, looks like you lost your best friend.”
DEACON- “You have to have friends to lose one.”
CASSANDRA- “What am I? chipped beef? So I take it Colt rejected your offer for a wild unadulterated love affair?”
DEACON- “Chipped beef, what does that mean, anyway. And, Please, don’t gloat. And do NOT say I told you so!”
CASSANDRA- “Not gloating, and I promise to not say I told you so. Just was stopping here to get a croissant before they closed. You are here late, isn’t it past your bedtime?’
As she walked over and sat down, I told her everything...
DEACON- “He then said... I am flattered you find me attractive but what you are in high school.. I am almost 20, like that was such a big age difference.”
CASSANDRA- “It may not seem that way to you, Deek, but to him it means he’d go to jail. At least he was very nice about the whole thing, I mean I know Colt pretty well he is an ass most of the time. Be thankful, apparently he does like you...as a friend!”
DEACON- “I suppose, you are right. He was nice and he is still willing to work with me on this project in Founder’s Cove.”
CASSANDRA- “Colt acts all dumb, it’s his persona, so to speak, but he is a rather smart guy, and his neighbor Jacob?. Major smart! He is an attorney, well not yet, but he will be. He is a paralegal now and still in law school, so they both are pretty intelligent. They could be a big asset to your project.”
DEACON- “They did have some great ideas I hadn’t thought about. They emphasized that the neighborhood was the people, not the buildings or the homes, but if we made them think that they were a real part of it, that things could change and they would become more involved.”
CASSANDRA- “See, so it was good thing to meet them. And trust me, Once you made a friend of Colt Dawson, he will be loyal. It’s his nature.”
DEACON- “Thanks, Cassie, I do feel better, but I do need to get home. Thanks again.”
CASSANDRA- “No problem, pretty boy... oh just so you know... I told you so!”
DEACON- “You are an asshole, Cassie.”
CASSANDRA- “Been called worse. Just wait until school starts back, you will find that love you are searching for, trust me, there are tons of guys and girls looking for lust, in all the wrong places!”
DEACON- “I think I will stop focusing on that. I have enough to keep me busy.”
