Medieval
I do not believe progress is always linear. There is always a cost and a trade, And the life we have made is not always superior.
Medieval life was not the misery of modernity minus technology. Do not dismiss the humble beauties we never got to see, Because the obvious little pleasantries baked into our souls Are widely-known companions too obvious to record. Lifetimes of folk songs fade from the collective consciousness in generations, Traditions cut from our bodies the way traditions are always excised, Through change and grief and the warping of memory in the passage of time.
There are lessons to be learned in history, Not only that which should be avoided But also legacies that have faded from the page, Wisdom from different people from a different time that are still people just like us.
Go outside and bask in the sunlight. Feel the warmth of another day. Enjoy the company of fresh-baked bread. Hum tunes and bawdy drinking songs and tell stories while you work. Witness the fullness of existence and feel the resonance in your bones Of a life that has always been simple, And is all the more beautiful for it.
