in summary, buck hasn’t ever been too close to his dad. for the most part, his father has taken his career as a priority over taking care of his kids. even when interacting with them, his position has always been more authoritative than nurturing in any regard. if what interests them doesn’t align with what he finds to be productive, he shuts it down as soon as possible.

this can also include things that seem abnormal, from his perspective (which, as is far too often the case in real life, includes sexualities that deviate from the traditional standard). as a result, buck has always felt repressed to a deeper level than his non-academically focused skill set. for his dad, unfortunately, buck ends up turning into exactly the son he never wanted. comfortable rebelling in some ways, and absolutely paralyzed in others, buck ends up relying on nate for comfort as he figures out how to confront his father.
