Since getting free from the Cage, Lucifer decided to lay low for a while. He found a weird little town in the middle of nowhere where the strange and unusual was entirely commonplace, and a group of lost angels that don't seem to remember much about heaven or who they used to be living with a woman named Josie, better know to the locals as Old Woman Josie.

Not wanting to cause an uproar with his true identity, Lucifer refused to let his name be known, and became known simply as the Black Angel for his pitch dark aura.

The trouble with Night Vale is it's easy to fall into line and become just anther part of the crazy. Lucifer's true identity is gradually slipping away from him and he's starting to forget that he is the second eldest son of God and not just another of the 'non-existent' angels of Night Vale.

Nathaniel has grown very dependent on Lucifer, and while he probably now has the ability to look after himself, for Lucifer is the font of knowledge on defense against pretty much every being ever, he would be uncomfortable facing anyone on his own. He knows that without the archangel, he is just a fragile little human, and no matter how skilled he might be, he can so easily be broken.

Given the way his trust was broken, and Lucifer's interference before it could be repaired in a healthy and natural way, his trust is extremely hard to earn, and currently only Lucifer has it.

Nathaniel's parents were both skilled hunters, but when his mother fell pregnant, they somehow managed to find a quiet corner of the country and give him a normal suburban upbringing with no idea of how real the things that went bump in the night actually were. 

Eventually he moved to New York to carve out his own business, and did a pretty good job of it until one night, while visiting his parents on vacation. The woman he'd picked up at the bar had turned out to be a vampire. Just as she was about to tear his throat out, there was a sound of tearing flesh followed by the dull, wet thump of something falling to the floor, proceeded almost immediately by a louder thud as body followed head. 

It was a few minutes before Nathaniel recovered enough to realise that it wasn't his body that had fallen, that his face was wet with tears he hadn't even realised he'd shed in his fear, and after blinking a few times he managed to bring the figure standing over the monster into focus.

His mother was stood there, bloodied blade in hand, no idea how to explain everything that she'd kept from her son for so long. Though both parents had retired from the hunting game, she couldn't sit by with a vampire feeding in their neighborhood. While the monster managed to stay a step ahead of her most of the time, seeing it lead her own son off made her up the ante.

In shock from what had happened and frustrated that his parents had kept so many things he felt he'd deserved to know for his own safety from him, he got in his car and drove off, eventually stopping at some rundown motel when he lost the energy to keep going.

That was when he'd first heard the whispering voice, promising that if he let it in it would keep him safe.That it knew how it felt to be betrayed by one's parents. That it would protect him and teach him all that he needed to know about all things inhuman. That it would take care of him and never lie to him or cover anything up.

With no idea what he was getting himself into, but a desperate need for someone who understood him, for a need to feel safe, to learn what he was up against--

Where Lucifer is used to being the outcast that few of the angels have any regard for, Michael was in a seat of the highest power for so long that life since the pit has been a shock to the system. He can almost sympathise with Lucifer's actions, though he in no way agrees that it was the right way to do things. 

Being looked down on and disrespected is hard for Michael to take, and so he has the almost childish urge to sulk. When he is in these moods, curling up in a nest is the easiest way to make him feel better. Sometimes he'll lay for hours like that, he's even been known to sulk for days, though if one of his companions chooses to join him in his nest, he generally perks up quicker.
