“Why? What have I done?” Vini asked with a shocked look on his face.

“We have been reported that two young magis were causing havoc on the campus and people told us to split the fight.” Said a tall woman, wearing the same uniform as the other girl, with a tired expression on her face.

“A-ah! I was just trying to control my magic since I found out about it recently, but it wasn’t me who was causing trouble. I’m pretty sure the person you’re looking for ran away after that person hit me and passed out.” Vini said, trying to explain what happened.

Crossing her arms, the small woman crossed her arms in disbelief. “Sure, I’ll believe on the person who was found passed out with another magi that already has a ton of reports of causing havoc on the campus.”

“What he said is true, I was looking for someone else.” Haya said, scratching his head while yawning. “Oh, hi Jo!” He said.

Facepalming, the young woman looked at him, with a faint smile on her face. “Hey there, I can’t believe you’re doing this again.”

“Hm… I’m sorry to jump in the middle of your conversation but… who are you?” Vini said, confused with the situation.

The tall woman looked at Jo with a teasing smile, their eyes shined as if they were happy with the question.

“We are the Mods and our job is to moderate the capital, bringing justice for those who disobey the law!” Both of them said, smiling.

After a few seconds of silence they noticed how awkward that must have been and started to whisper at each other.

“Jooo I starting to think that it’s not a good idea to introduce yourselves like this.” Said the tall woman, covering her mouth.

“I know maybe it’s better we stop doing this, Tina.” Jo said, also covering her mouth.

Little they know that Vini’s silence was because he dreamed about meeting the people that he always read about on the newspapers, and then he realizes he was scolded by the people he admire, even with him having no fault about the havoc Haya and her friend were causing.

“I-I’m so sorry for bothering you two, I really appreciate all your hard work and I’m really sorry for the trouble I’ve caused!” Vini said, with his eyes closed and his face was starting to turn red.

Everyone just stared at him in silence, making him feel even more nervous.

When he got completely red due to the embarrassment he ran away saying: “I’m sorry!” Only to fall on the lake a few meters ahead of them.

Tina tried to hold her laugh as both Jo and Hay gasped at the scene. “Hay, can you do us a favor and take him out of there, please? We’ve got important Mod stuff to do.”

“Okayy I’ll do it.” Haya said, a bit annoyed with it.

“Thanks!”

The truth was that she wanted to get away as soon as possible so she could laugh loudly about it. A few hours passed after the incident, the sun was setting down, giving the sky an orange color. Vini observed the sunset from his room and saw how calm everything was, with some students walking around the campus while talking with their friends. The tense atmosphere from before was slowly fading away as people were going home.

“Man today sure was weird… oh my god I can’t believe I actually fell on the lake and had to be rescued by Hay…”

The more he thought about it, the more he got embarrassed over it; to a point his entire face was red. He went to the bathroom and washed his face, trying to cool down for a bit and, after changing to his pajamas, he laid down on his bed, trying to avoid thinking about the events that happened earlier in the day. He started to wonder about the Mod team and that reminded him about his family’s past in the capital.

“Oh, that’s right my family has some kind of history here. Maybe there’s something about it on the library here in the campus. I think I might go there tomorrow.”

He tried to sleep but when he finally closed his eyes to rest, the memories of himself falling in the lake and woke him up. That happened at least 3 times during the night.

It didn’t take long until the sun rose again and the birds were chirping again. Just a few minutes later, people started to get out from their houses… and Vini to fall from his bed.

“I’m too tired to even complain about this.” He said, with his head facing the ground.

After 5 minutes without moving, he got up and, after making his bed, he went to the bathroom and dressed up, hoping that this day would be a good one.

Vini walked to the Royal Library, that wasn’t too far from the dormitory he lived on.

After he arrived, Vini was shocked by the building where the library was because it was the first time he got so close to it and he believed it was a lot smaller from the image on the map.

But all the tension was replaced by astonishment when he saw how awesome it was inside there, with a several people inside there and everyone respected the silence rule. Vini never thought he would be so amused by a bunch of old books.

He walked slowly through the library, excited with the variety of the books and by the architecture of the Library, which reminded him of the interior of a castle.

“Maybe that’s why it’s called the Royal Library, right?” He thought to himself, and ended up laughing silently to avoid distracting the readers.

When he was getting close to the front desk, Vini turned his head to see the view the librarians see while they’re working but he ended up seeing someone he wasn’t expecting to find there.

That person was Jo, the Mod that saw him falling on the lake before. Scared to be scolded by the person he admires, Vini hides between the shelves.

“Oh god oh god I can’t let her find me here or I’ll be screwed.” Vini thought to himself, panicking a bit.

He started to yawn. “Thinking about it, it’s kinda comfy here… The cold air makes me feel so sleepy… And I almost didn’t sleep at night…”

It only took 3 minutes for him to fall asleep there, in the middle of the books. But he didn’t sleep for a long time, before he could dream; someone started to shake him up while saying:

“Hey, are you ok? Wake up, did anything happened?” The young woman said.

“Another angel?” Vini thought while waking up.

But after realizing that the person who was waking him up was Jo, he jumped back in embarrassment.

“Oh my god I can’t believe I fell asleep here I’m so so sorry for worrying you.” He said, quickly while closing his eyes.

Jo put her hand in his face, surprising Vini.

“Hey, take care of yourself, ok? If you’re tired, go home and rest, it will be better for both your mind and body, alright?” She said with a faint smile on her face.

“I’m sorry but I’m a bit late so I have to run until the Mayor’s HQ now. Take care!” The young woman then ran away, leaving Vini blushing and speechless.

After a few minutes staring at the same spot she went to, he reminded about what he was going to do on the library, and calmly walked to the reception, where he found a woman wearing a top hat and with a tiny mouse on her shoulder, one that Vini ended up not noticing.

“Hi… hm… do you have any book about the military force that helped the last the Barr family?”

“Oh hi! And yeah, we do have a book but I must warn you… the book is really big and heavy so take care to not hurt yourself with it.”

“Ah, it’s ok! I can do it!” Vini said, smiling.

“Alright just don’t tell me I didn’t warn you.” The woman said as she held this book that was bigger than Vini’s torso.

She gave it to Vini, only to him use all his forces to hold it and still try to keep his balance.

“T-thank you.” He said, almost losing his breath.

The woman with the top hat waved at him and said: “You’re welcome!”

Vini walked to the nearest table, just to put the book there and sit, almost sweating with the effort he used to carry the book. He opened the book on a random page, before going to the index to search for his family’s group.

The random page opened on a military group called “the Vultures”, but Vini didn’t pay attention to it and quickly moved to the index. After some time of searching, he finally found his family’s group, called “the Demons.”

Vini opened the book on the right page, but he could never imagine what he would find there.

okay there was this time on one holiday where my family and I were on a boat but it was this cool sort of boat and it had a glass floor and you could go downstairs and sit and watch the fishes and stuff and it was v cool

but I hate boats and I hate the ocean and I hate being in it but I think I’m getting better at being in it now without stressing too much but then, nope being in the ocean was out of the question

and so I was sitting on the bench with my sister and people started coming and the room was filling up pretty quickly and I could not breathe. It was too warm and sticky and there was glass and water everywhere and I started panicking and it was terrible

With frantic footfalls, the band traversed through moist soil of the forest bed, the chorus of squishing footsteps giving their position away. Behind them, they looked back repeatedly into the encroaching darkness. Though it was pitch, they could feel their pursuer’s approach, coming on them fast. Suddenly, in that blackness, a tiny flame blazed and a fireball ripped through the air, smashing into one of their backs, sending the victim to the ground in burning agony. He cried, rolling in the dirt to snuff out the flames that licked his back.

Without a thought, they left him behind, running ever faster, further into the foliage, ignoring the screams for help from their comrade. Sticking together, the group ran out into an opening and skid to a halt, bumping into one another. Ahead of them a bright crackling blue light, illuminated the meadow around them. Before them, a slender cloaked figure held up a hand, tendrils of electricity sparking around their hand.

“Seems you’ve hit a dead end,” a condescending feminine voice purred.

Each of them reached for their weapons out of reflex but collectively thought otherwise and looked to each other in a second of panic before suddenly breaking apart, everyone running into different directions. The cloaked person giggled lightly and slammed their hands to the ground, the static shivering down their arms into the earth, a wave of electricity fanning out and crawling up over a few of them, paralyzing them as they plunged to the ground, twitching from the crackling blue that cracked about them. Three had escaped the attack, the two lieutenants and the bands leader.

“Run, run little piggy’s,” she hollered.

That is what they did. They kept at it, stupidly hoping to escape their hunters.

Lucky or not so lucky, one of the lieutenants halted just before running off a cliff into a violent ravine that streamed down the mountain. Cursing under his breath, he turned to find a different route but froze as another cloaked figure stood before him, this one clearly different from the other. A powerful burning smell emanated from this person and in the moonlight that peeked out from the break in the clouds revealed a charred cloaked uniform, a red band wrapped around the person’s arm.

“Back the fuck off,” the lieutenant roared, pulling his cleaver free. “I will not think twice about slicing you in half!”

A chuckle was all he got in response. Lifting their arms before them, flames burst to life, flickering up and down their arms, casting a ghastly glow about.

With no way to run, he jerked the heavy cleaver out of its crude sheath and pointed at his opponent. Taking no second to let his enemy prepare he charged, hefting the cleaver above him, preparing for a downward swipe. This being his signature move, he flawlessly brought his weapon down. Expecting the satisfaction of a spurt of blood, he was dissatisfied to notice his blade cut into nothing, plunging into the dirt, leaving a small rupture in the ground.

Lifting the blade up immediately after, he barely guarded in time as a fireball blasted into his blade, knocking him back only inches away from the edge. Peeking over his shoulder, he got a good view of the jagged rocks that spotted the ravine. If he fell, he would be speared and washed away. Taking his chances in a fight as always, he charged again. With great strength, he flurried his opponent, swinging and slashing in rapid succession but to no avail. The cloaked person dodged each attack, though the sword came within an inch from their body each time. Even though they could dodge, they were still not truly experienced, he thought. If he kept this up, he was bound to hit eventually.

They went at it for a good minute before the cleaver grew heavy in his weary arms and his attacks decreased in speed. Seeing this, he bet it all on one final strike. Kicking the cloaked person back, with all his might, he tried to follow up with his signature downward swipe. Seeing the sword come down, he knew he had his enemy finished.

In a blur of motion, something red suddenly whipped through his arm. In that second, he saw his arm separated from his body, flinging over the edge of the cliff along with his weapon. Gasping in horror, he tried to scream as the blood spurted from his stump arm, but nothing came out. Darting his eyes back forward, he saw four, red, crystalline serpent like appendages sprouted from his enemies lower back and eyes wide, stared as he fell to his knees.

“Laughable,” the cloaked figure sneered. “I’m sure you’d taste horrible.”

In defiance, the lieutenant tried to rebuff with foul language but was cut off as the cloaked person placed a hand over his mouth and sent a rush of heat into his head, causing it to combust into flying chunks and flame that splattered across the person’s black uniform.

“Sorry, I didn’t get that.”

 A ways away, the other lieutenant being of much lighter build, had covered a greater distance. A little bit further and he would reach the city of Ekard where he could lie low. Nearly sifting over the downed trees, he weaved about. Almost free, he thought to himself.

“Where do you think you are going,” that familiar voice he had heard only moments ago asked from only a few feet back.

Not looking back, he stayed his course, not responding.

“I really dislike being ignored,” the voice blared, irritant.

Again, ignoring her, he hopped over a log and suddenly felt a spasm of pain strike his leg, followed by a crackling boom. Tumbling down, he rolled in the muck, smacking his head hard. He had no time to regain his focus before they were standing over him. Bending a hand down on the befuddled man’s chest, the person forced a torturing jolt all throughout him; his body trembled violently, body flailing before falling unconscious to the pain.

“What a lieutenant you were,” they spat. “I’m sure the beefy one put up a much better fight.”

Pulling out some wire, the person tied the lieutenant’s arms behind his back, then tying his legs together before dragging him by the leg. Then out of nowhere, something grabbed the cloaked figures leg and before they could protest, they were dragged swiftly into the darkness along with the unconscious body. In a second, they were in the realm of shadows, the screams of the lost souls puncturing their eardrums, and then they were tossed back outside, landing before a small fort made of branch and tree.

Hoping back to their feet, they noticed their charred comrade beside them and the bandleader ahead, wrapped in unnatural shadows. He was screaming as the shadows tightened around him, squeezing the life out of him.

“Seems we all got our prey,” they said. Looking to the charred figure, they tilted their head. “What happened to yours?”

“I lost mine.”

“Weren’t we supposed to capture them?”

“No,” another, sinister voice answered from behind them. “Death is the only way for them.”

Turning together, they saw the helmeted Mod approaching from the pitch black, serrated curved blade in hand, no doubt covered in the blood of the stunned captives.

“Raz,” they said in reverence.

Raz nodded to them both slowly walked up to the leader whose fearful gaze stuck on him.

“Please,” the leader begged. “I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll never cause problems again.”

“I’m sure of that,” Raz dully replied.

“You can’t kill me,” he huffed. “You’re a Mod! You are bound by the Queen to give me a proper court hearing!”

“They wouldn’t send me otherwise. Also, I’m just saving them their time.”

With a flick of his hand, a serpentine shadow blade rose from the surroundings lashed across the man’s neck, removing his head from his shoulders.

“Now that that’s finished, Hay….dispose of your captive,” Raz said.

Hay removed her hood, letting the cool wind kiss her sweaty face. “I…um…”

She could feel his invisible gaze behind that helmet and for a second, it sent a shiver down her spine.

“I don’t think I can…”

Expecting to be scolded, she was surprised when he simply turned his back to her. Shadowed hands ensnared the unconscious man’s head and Hay flinched as the neck snapped.

“Either way,” Raz said. “You did well on your first mission with me, well done. Fog dispose of this eye sore.”

Fog removed his hood and sauntered past Hay with a smirk. Raising his palms, he released a burst of fire from his palms that devoured the wooden structure, sending plumes of black smoke into the night sky.
