me: haha yeah it's so good!
me internally: hnk was created a full year before Steven universe and centers around an entirely different plot line, set of characters, themes, and caters to a wildly different audience. HNK is about discovering the ultimate goal of life and the horrors of immortality while Steven universe focuses on the different relationships people can have. HNK is for an older audience and is serialized in a Japanese seinen manga while SU is a cartoon aimed towards children. Can we stop comparing HNK to Steven Universe when these shows, their purposes, and their origins are completely different. Do we have to recommend HNK only on a basis of how similar it is to SU? Or are we allowed to recognize HNK's creativity and social awareness (including the presence of exclusivly nonbinary characters) without referring to SU as some sort of baseline for media with gem people??!?! Especially when houseki no kuni came first?? Thanks.
