"Your roommate is into you. You know that, right?"

"What?!" Kate yelps, looking up at America like she’s insane. Cassie giggles. It’s Wednesday afternoon and they’re all sitting in the campus cafeteria. It’s the only day of the week the three girls are all free for lunch at the same time.

"Tommy," America clarifies like Kate doesn’t know who her roommate is. "He’s into you."

Kate laughs. “Are you insane?”

"She’s right," Cassie says. "Tommy’s totally in love with you."

"Don’t be ridiculous," Kate replies, going back to her pasta salad. Neither of them say anything and Kate looks back up at them a moment later. It’s kind of scary that two people who are so different can manage to give her such identical looks of are-you-fucking-kidding-me?

"She doesn’t get it," Cassie says, turning to America.

"Princess, how are you so blind?" America asks.

Kate rolls her eyes. “I’m not blind. You’re just wrong. I mean, c’mon. He’s my best friend. I think I’d know if he was in love with me.”

"You’d think," Cassie replies. "But Kate, you haven’t even realized that the feeling is mutual yet."

"I’m sorry," Kate says, feeling dazed. "What are you talking about."

"The fact that you and Tommy are in love with each other," Cassie explains calmly, like she didn’t just say the most insane thing Kate has ever heard.

"We are not!" Kate insists. America and Cassie exchange a dubious look and Kate huffs an annoyed sigh. "We’ve been getting this for years, y’know. People always assume we’re dating. They don’t think a guy and a girl can be just friends."

"A guy and a girl can be just friends," America replies. "You and Tommy can’t."

"And why can’t we?" Kate demands.

"Because you’re in love with each other," Cassie answers, clearly amused.

"We are not!" Kate repeats.

"Sure," Cassie replies sarcastically. "But you are never going to convince me that your last boyfriend wasn’t just a Tommy stand-in."

"Noh?" Kate asks. "What does he have to do with this?"

"Oh, come on, Kate!" Cassie laughs. "He looks exactly like Tommy! And we’re talking about a guy with white hair here. That’s not an easy thing to find."

"They have the exact same green hoodie," America adds. "And they both wear it all the time."

"Okay, fine. Maybe they look alike," Kate concedes. "But that doesn’t mean anything. And Noh and I broke up, if you recall."

"Yeah, because he went back to his ex," Cassie replies. "Not because of how he looked."

"And you did say that he took himself to seriously," America says. "He wasn’t any fun by the end."

"You know who doesn’t take himself seriously at all and is a lot of fun?" Cassie asks. "Tommy."

Kate wants to keep arguing. She wants to tell them they’re crazy. She wants them to drop it.

Tommy’s her best friend, of course she loves him. But in love with him? It’s ridiculous.

Okay, so maybe he knows everything about her and vice versa. Maybe he’s the only person she wants to see after a bad day. Maybe they like all the same music and movies and TV shows. Maybe he just gets her in a way no one else ever has.

But that’s because they’re best friends.

Right?
