my favourite period dramas
originally posting for hawkaeye but I figured some of you may find this helpful.
tv series:
Rome (HBO, 2 seasons): my personal favourite. Deals with the rise and fall of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Not the most historically accurate period drama out there but great acting, set, and costume design. Was tragically cut short in favour of the now terrible Game of Thrones (if you’ve watched GOT it’s fun to pick out all the actors in Rome who were later cast in GOT).
The Borgias (Showtime, 3 seasons): deals with the rise and fall of the Borgia pope and his family and all the shady things they did to stay in power (hint: lots of murder and debauchery). Another period drama cut too short (although this could be a good thing, considering how terrible the film script was that the creator proposed in lieu of a fourth season). Lush sets and gorgeous costumes as well as A+ acting. Not really historically accurate. Do not tweet about this show as you will get twenty people asking you to sign the petition to #SavetheBorgias even though it’s been off-air for a few years now.
The Hour (BBC, 2 seasons): *gross sobbing noises* THE BEST SHOW, CUT TRAGICALLY TOO SHORT (starting to see a pattern?). About a struggling news hour on TV in the 1950s. Gorgeous costumes and great ladies (BEL ROWLEY THE LOVE OF MY LIFE). This show was honestly perfect, I will mourn the loss of it forever.
Emma (BBC, miniseries): MY FAVOURITE AUSTEN ADAPTION OF ALL TIME, SO GREAT. I may be slightly biased as I love every actor on this show and Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller have amazing chemistry together. It is honestly my favourite feel-good period drama and a great place to start if you’re new to the whole period-drama thing.
Penny Dreadful (Showtime, still airing): imagine if Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and Dracula all lived in London at the same time. If that doesn’t intrigue you then I don’t know what would. This is such a great gothic show with awesome ladies. This show does have a lot of horror and horror related violence so it’s not for everyone but I would recommend at least watching the pilot and going from there.
Agent Carter (ABC, still airing): this show is too much. Peggy Carter is such a great character and her having her own television show means so much. The show deals with Peggy Carter and the fallout from WWII and her adventures with Captain America. Now’s a great time to marathon this show before s2 premieres.
Vikings (History, still airing): deals with the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok and his adventures. Has the best ladies (can you tell where my priorites lie?) as well as amazing acting and gorgeous scenery. This isn’t the most accurate but is not the worst offender. Has great fight and adventure scenes.
The Musketeers (BBC, still airing): based of the Three Musketeers novel. This show is super fun and campy which is kind of a nice break from the more intense period dramas.
Galavant (ABC, still airing): THE MOST CAMPY SHOW EVER. Basically a musical television show dealing with the knight Galavant and his heroic quest to save the love of his life. The most hilarious show that was only just renewed so everyone watch s2!!!
Downton Abbey (PBS, still airing): Currently in its last season although I would only really recommend the first three seasons as it kind of falls apart after that. Deals with the Crawley family from the beginning of the 20th century and onwards. Amazing costumes and wonderful acting.
The Tudors (Showtime, 4 seasons): not my favourite period drama but probably one of the most popular period dramas at least on tumblr. Deals with Henry VIII and his six wives. Not extremely historical accurate with some horrendous costumes (ANNE’S PURPLE DRESS NEVER FORGET) but worth watching for Natalie Dormer’s amazing performance of Anne Boleyn.
Pride and Prejudice (BBC miniseries): THE DEFINITIVE AUSTEN ADAPTION. Literally all Austen adaptions have to live up to this standard and are constantly compared to it by other Austen buffs. Vital period drama watching. Also Young Colin Firth.
movies:
(note I’m not a big movie buff and I tend to enjoy period drama television series more than films but here a few period drama related films that I have enjoyed).
Belle (2013 film): honestly such a great movie. Is about the historical Dido Elizabeth Belle, a mixed race daughter of an aristocrat and the racism she experiences. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is so gorgeous and amazing in this role. Warning: this film will make you cry buckets so bring tissues.
Sense and Sensibility (1995 film): this is Emma Thompson’s adaption of the Austen novel of the same name. Another famous Austen drama and is honestly so perfect. Has Alan Rickman in it if you’re into that.
12 Years a Slave (2013 film): I know this film was widely watched in 2013, but it’s still an important film that everyone should watch at least once. Not the most easy film to watch as it is about the slave trade but worth it.
Pan’s Labyrinth (2006 film): honestly my favourite film ever. Such gorgeous visuals and wonderful storytelling. It is in Spanish so you need to watch it with subtitles but honestly so worth it.
this was super long and I’ve probably missed so many despite the length (I watch a ton of period dramas) but I hope you’ve found this helpful. I’ll probably add to this list as I watch more (because there’s a million I want to watch).
also I recommend following weloveperioddrama for all the period drama gifsets you need as well as lots of recommendations for period drama films/tv series to watch.

So far it’s been pretty meh. The most recent ep especially.

I don’t know why but I like weird goofy Britta over season 1 Britta ( this doesn’t necessarily pertain to anything you said…)
hmm i love s1 britta but i also love weird goofy britta i just think we’re taking weird goofy britta too far? she’s ALWAYS the butt of the joke now and i wish once in awhile she had a real story or something

what would you change about The Raven Cycle?
OKAY HERE WE GO:
how it was marketed. the reason why I avoided picking it up for so long was because it seemed to be another ~forbidden~ romance and I don't care about that.
THE WHOLE ADAM/RONAN RELATIONSHIP. FUCK ADAM PARRISH SERIOUSLY. if this ship becomes endgame, adam is going to need a serious overhaul as a character because right now he is terrible.
I don't like a lot of what maggie did in bllb? I really hate the persephone thing and how she made matthew a dream object... so basically screw most of bllb tbh.
wtf is the maura/grey man thing??? wouldn't she be slightly concerned about blue? don't get me wrong, I love them as a couple but it's written kind of weird tbh.
AGAIN BECAUSE NO ONE IN THE FANDOM EVER SAYS IT FUCK ADAM PARRISH
best dead friends forever
