Ethiopia’s Sidama People Vote On Regional State

Polls have opened in Hawassa city southern Ethiopia for a referendum on the creation of a new federal regional state to be called Sidama. More than two million people are registered to vote.

The Sidama ethnic group, who make up about 4% of the population, will control local taxes, education, security and laws in a new region, if the referendum passes.
