āWell, look at that little brother, while weāre busy attending to our tenants, these two have been having a nice little drink!ā
Bertrand Ysengrin chortled, while Berthe raised her glass in a toast to her husband Raoul and her sister-in-law.Ā
āItās good stuff! Arbor red, your motherās favorite, Raoul!ā
āYouāve been raiding her wine supply? Gods help you,ā said Raoul, attempting and failing to look stern.
āAhhh... Donāt worry about it son, nothing stolen here, this fine bottle was left as a gift with one of our servants,ā answered Bertrand,Ā āI would guess itās from someone trying to gain favour with our family, but the servant said that he left no name. A most mysterious benefactor.ā
āSee love? A victimless crimeā, noted Berthe, taking one more sip.

That day, the elders of the Ysengrin Noble family, Dame Astrid and Seigneur Bertrand, had come to the seat of the Hautfonds House to meet Seigneur Eloi. The Ysengrin were enraged with the construction of a new Almshouse on what they argued was their land, a large terrain off the coast.
āThe land youāre building on is Ysengrin land! Itās clearly marked as ours on the Queenās cadaster! What madness possessed you to build your cursed poor-house on it?ā, seethed Astrid.
āPerhaps thereās been some sort of mistake Eloi, Iām sure we will find a solution,ā said Bertrand, vainly trying to soften his wifeās harsh accusation,Ā āIām sure you see, as we all do, that the land belongs to the Ysengrin.ā
Eloi broke into a mirthless laugh.
āHalf of that land belonged to my wife, Astrid. She never claimed it during her lifetime, but it was due time someone put it to good use,ā he said.
āNonsense, Iām the eldest, I inherited everything, including our familial lands! Beatrice decided to marry into the Hautfonds family, and she paid the price for it. My sister owned no land to pass on to you,ā argued Astrid.
āI knew you Ysengrin lived in the past, but reviving an ancient law to deprive your dead sisterās family of her due, that is unacceptable,ā declared Eloi, struggling to remain calm behind his polished faƧade.
āDonāt presume to judge me you weasel!,ā shouted Astrid.
āHe is your brother in law...ā, muttered Bertrand, trying desperately to accomplish the impossible- smooth over a family conflict armed only with goodwill.
āWeasel! I have had enough of you, witch! Iām graciously inviting you both into my home, only to be insulted... and all this for an Almshouse! Iām trying to do some good, and this selfish crone only thinks of her ill-gotten gains!ā
āAlmshouse! Ha! Call it what it is, a place to dispose of your bastards! You were never faithful to my sister, and now youāre stealing from her family! Watcher knows, Iām glad sheās dead so she wonāt have to see this.ā
Eloi winced, silent under Astridās verbal onslaught. When she finished her last sentence, she stopped herself, aware that she had gone too far.
Eloi took a deep breath. His usual quick wit had deserted him.
āGet out,ā he simply said.

After all the tragedies that would follow, both families would think back to this moment, to this discussion between Astrid and Eloi. Were things already irremediably spoiled then? Could something have been done to prevent the following events?Ā
Dame Clotilde Hautfonds finally found her husband in the drawing room. She had looked for him everywhere, not wanting to be left alone with the terrible news she bore.
āClotilde, calm down darling, your hands are trembling! Whatās the matter?ā asked Seigneur Edouard Hautfonds.
āOh Edouard, Iām just back from the courts... those Ysengrin have done it! Theyāve blocked all further construction on the Almshouse until the matter is settled by a judge... I canāt help but think of those poor orphans going hungry... itās heart-breaking!ā
āThatās terrible Clotilde. I donāt understand why your aunt is so intent on taking back those lands, itās causing you and your father a lot of pain.ā
āUgh, my father...ā moaned Dame Clotilde, putting her head on her husbandās chest.
āRight, Iām sure he wonāt be pleased...ā
āThatās an understatement. He left the courthouse and went straight to the nearest alehouse. Knowing him, he wonāt leave it at that. Iām afraid heās going to do something terrible...ā
