THIS IS REALLY LONG AND I’M SORRY
I just wanted to write an update on everything that’s happened with Hathan.
About 5 weeks ago, Hathan started swelling up on his left side - his hand and arm the first day, foot and ankle the next - and he was in so much pain, he wouldn’t put any pressure on his leg and he wouldn’t walk. We took him to the hospital a few times, one doctor saying “Oh it’s probably just a spider bite” and gave us Cephalexin, and after all the tiny red dots popped up around his swelling, the next “Oh it’s got to be ant bites” and again gave us Cephalexin, prednisolone, and diphenhydramine. During the time he was with the doctor, a large painful bump that completely covered Hathan’s lower back had appeared, but he wasn’t concerned about it, and we were sent home.
This didn’t sit well with me - to be honest, I was pissed. I didn’t feel like we were being taken seriously, it wasn’t a bug bite, I knew. After he started having bad abdominal pain a day later, we got him in with our primary doctor, who agreed with me(finally!) and ran some blood work(which was horrible, Hathan is now terrified of needles and shots). A few days later, Hathan was officially diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called HSP (Henoch-Schonlein Purpura) or IgA Vasculitis. This causes small blood vessels to swell and leak all over the body, primarily affecting the legs and arms, the GI tract, and sometimes the kidneys. There’s not anything that can be done for it aside from a steroid for the pain, for Hathan it was prednisolone. They don’t really know what, if anything, causes it, but it usually resolves itself in 6-8 weeks.
The first 2 weeks were so hard for all of us. Hathan was in a lot of pain, and couldn’t walk, so we carried him everywhere… a lot of the time, even that would hurt. All the dots would turn into bruising before disappearing and popping up at the next place of swelling, and he didn’t eat as much as normal because of the abdominal pain. We had one more incident where we took him back to the hospital and we’re transferred to a larger one - his ‘member’ had swollen up to the size of a ping pong ball within 20 minutes and was extremely red and extremely painful. We thought it was some kind of infection but was apparently another symptom of HSP, and after an overnight stay, we got to go home. It was back to normal after about 4 days.
Slowly but surely, it all started easing up. He no longer swelled up, and all the pain became a lot more bearable. He’s been off of the steroid for about a week and a half, he only swells up a little when he’s been playing really hard, and the abdominal and joint pain are minor, some days he doesn’t even have any. He still gets covered in the dots and bruises, a few have even popped up on his ears and face, but I think it’s clearing up and on its way out. I’m just excited for my Bub to be back to his self and healthy!
