When I was younger, my theory of child development was: Babies = Houseplants that need sunshine, care, and feeding, just lie there, and cry. Toddlers = House pets that respond to their name, can do simple tricks, also be careful not to make them cry. Kids = Bushes that move, leave their leaves, I mean toys, everywhere, and oh, still be careful not to make them cry. Teens = Sometimes malevolent tricksters that can make you cry (being a teen at the time, I knew the game). I was waiting to cross a busy street whiling thinking how much I hate traffic. I watched this scene play out from across the scary intersection. The boy noticed that color-wise he matched the sign, and couldn't resist the pose. I could see his mind working: he was considering directing traffic, possibly into the river...wait, oh no--that was my thinking. My daily commute, in Orange County, CA, is about 20 miles. It takes about more than an hour to drive in typical traffic (no accidents or anything). An average person can bike that same distance in 2 hours. But if there were no cars (or streets, or highways, or parking lots), everything could be built closer together and my work could be only an hour away by bike.
Cars have gained us no actual convenience. They make travel faster, but at the same time, make us travel further.
