When Itâs Only Me and You
Song: Just the Way You Look Tonight- Frank Sinatra. Â
Warm arms wrapped around my waist, a sloppy kiss being pressed to my cheek as I continued cutting the onions I was preparing for dinner. Â It was a quiet Friday night in, and while that usually meant takeout and a movie, Harry suggested it would be fun to cook. Â I was busy making a pasta with chicken and Harry decided he was going to make a cobbler for dessert.
I smiled, wrinkling my nose. âYouâre distracting me.â I hummed, but secretly didnât want him to move. Â
He tightened his arms and I could feel him smile against my neck. âSorry. Â You just look so sexy in that apron.â
I giggled, setting the knife down and turning around so I could kiss him properly.
âI try.â
He kissed me once more, my bottom lip tucked between his before he pulled away, making a face.
He ran the pads of his thumbs under my eyes, catching the tears that had formed due to the onions.
âWow. I knew I was a good kisser, but you donât need to cry.â
I shoved him just playfully as he smirked, walking to the other side of the counter.
âThose were the onions you goof. Â Youâre just alright.â
âHeeyyy,â he whined.
I winked at him before turning back to the onions. Â I finished cutting up the vegetables I was preparing for the sauce and set them aside, moving onto the chicken. Â We had the radio turned on to an oldies station, and every once in a while I could hear Harry humming along. Â
I looked over at Harry and smiled at his cute, concentrated face. Â His brows were puckered and his lips were pursed as he continued to roll out the dough. Â His hair was pulled up into a bun, a few pieces escaping, tickling his neck, and he was wearing a soft black jumper with the sleeves rolled up. Â He looked unbelievingly comfy.
He caught me looking at him and grinned back.
âHowâs it going over there?â
I put the chicken in the pan, turning the stove on.
âGood. Howâs your cobbler coming along?â
He bit his lip in concentration, carefully lifting the dough from the counter into the pan.
âPretty well. Can you hand me the peaches, Peaches?â Â I rolled my eyes and pushed the jars closer to him as he giggled at his own joke.
âWhat? I had to.â
A few minutes later Harry finished the cobbler and put in the oven. Â I had the chicken done and had the water boiling for pasta as I moved onto making the sauce.
I heard Harry gasp behind me as he turned the radio up. Â I could hear him behind me, singing along to the song, his rocky voice filling up the kitchen.
âSomeday, when Iâm awfully low.â
His hands gripped my hips as he spun me around, into his chest. His eyes were bright and he had on that lopsided smirk that made my insides melt.
âHarry.â
âWhen the world is cold. Â I will feel a glow just thinking of you.â
I laughed as he spun me under his arm, pulling me into a dip. He sang the last line of the song against my mouth, his voice vibrating against my lips, causing me to giggle.
âAnd the way you look, tonight.â
We were both laughing as he pulled me back up, our arms wrapping around each other.
Harry nuzzled his face in my neck as we swayed around the kitchen in time with the music. Â
Too soon the timer for the pie went off and I reluctantly pulled away. Â
Harry cupped my face in his hands and leaned in, kissing me deep and slow.
I sighed, pulling the elastic from his hair so it fell, curtaining his face. Â I tangled it through my hands, both of us trying to catch our breath as his lips moved to my neck.
I hummed, bringing his lips back up to mine, kissing him softly. âArenât you a charmer tonight?â
He laughed breathily, kissing the tip of my nose. Â âJust for you, beautiful.â
He stepped away, and bent down to take out the cobbler. Â
I beamed shamelessly and went back to making dinner.
**
âHey Harry, will you try this?â
âOf course.â
I scooped some sauce from the pan and spooned it into his mouth.
I stuck it in his mouth sooner than he was ready for, causing a dribble of sauce to run down the front of his shirt. Â
He pulled at his sweater looking down at it and frowning. âThis is my favorite sweater.â
He looked back up at me with a glint in his eye, reaching over and pinching some of the leftover flour that was sitting on the counter. Â
âHarry, what are you doing?â
He smirked as he lifted his hand, aiming it at me.
I took a step back, lifting my hands.
âHarry donât, it was an accid-â
Before I could finish speaking, he flicked his fingers, shooting the flour onto my face.
I wiped my eyes and gawked at him as he brushed his hands, looking very pleased with himself. Â
I turned and reached for some flour, cupping it in my hand and bringing it up to my mouth, blowing it all over Harry. Â
He gasped, looking down at his, now white, sweater and laughed looking back up at me.
âOh no.â
I turned to run around the other side of the counter, but he moved quick. Â
He scooped me up in his arms, and I shrieked, trying to maneuver out of his grip.
I was laughing too hard so my attempt to get away was pointless.
He grabbed another handful of flour and smeared it all over my face and hair.
We were both a mess and laughing hysterically, making a complete disaster of the kitchen. Â I saw the leftover bowl of cobbler filling on the counter and reached for it.
âOh no you donâtâ
Harry bent down, wrapping his arms around my knees and threw me over his shoulder.
I cackled and gripped the bottom of his shirt as he carried me back around the counter.
He set me down, backing me up against the counters, kissing me again.
He pulled away and laughed, brushing away some of the flour from my cheeks.
âYouâre just not playing fair tonight.â
âNope.
He grabbed the can of whipped cream that was sitting on the counter and sprayed a trail of it across my neck.
âHarry!â
He leaned in and began licking it off, nipping and kissing my skin as he went.
He pulled away chuckling, licking the cream off his lips.
âYa know,â Â He said shaking the can, âWe could have some real fun with this.â
I scoffed, my eyes scanning over the mess we had made of the kitchen.
âI think weâve had enough fun for tonight. And what about dinner?â
He ran his palms across my bum, gripping my thighs and lifting me up on the counter, settling himself between my legs.
I tangled my hands back in his hair as he peppered kisses across my chest and jawline.
âLet it burn.â
I opened my mouth to protest as he pressed a kiss to my pulse point, making me moan.
âMmm, alright. Â You win.â
He smiled, victoriously against my neck before bringing his lips up to meet mine.Â
Cramps and Cosabella
It was finally Saturday, and after a long week I was planning on sleeping until noon. Â Harry was leaving on a camping trip with the boys around ten and I was spending the day with some girlfriends later in the afternoon. Â Â My plans to sleep in unfortunately changed though when Harry wouldnât stop tossing and turning beside me. Â
I slowly opened one eye, and when my vision focused I could read the clock that said it was about 7:30. Â I sighed and rolled over so I was facing Harry. Â He had a grimace on his face, but I could tell he was still asleep. Â I closed my eyes hoping to fall back asleep, but he turned again and groaned.
âHarry?â
He groaned again, flipping around. Â His back was facing me so I shook his shoulder lightly. Â He didnât wake, so I sat up slightly, resting my head in my hand. Â
His breathing was a bit shallow and I could see that his face was flushed. I laid my hand, gently on his forehead and could feel it was a bit warm and clammy. Â I massaged my hand down his arm and tried to wake him again. Â
âHarry.â
His breathing hitched and he turned his head, slowly opening his eyes.
âYou ok, green eyes?â
He turned onto his back and ran his hands over his face and then through his hair.
âMmm, mâalright.â
He yawned again as his head lolled onto his shoulder.
I leaned in and kissed his heated cheek, frowning when I realized it was warmer than his forehead.
âAre you sure youâre ok? I think you might have fever.â
He nodded again and rolled over so he was sprawled on top of me, nuzzling his face into my neck. Â
His husky voice vibrated against my chest as he spoke. â âDidnât sleep very well, âve got a bit of a stomach cramp.â
I kissed his temple, running my hand comfortingly through his hair. Â âIâm sorry, baby. Â Are you gonna be up to going today?â
He exhaled and cleared his throat. Â âYa. âJust need to get up nâgoing and iâll be alright.â
âYou sure?â
He tilted his head and his kissed my jaw. âWhy? You wanna stay home and play doctor?â
I swatted his arm playfully, causing him to whine. Â âDonât hit me, Iâm already poorly. Â I didnât even mean it that way.â Â
He sat up a bit and nibbled beneath my earlobe. âI mean unless you want toâŚâ
I laughed and sat up a bit further. Â âAlright, cheeky. Â If youâre going you better start getting ready.â
He murmured something about not wanting to share a tent with niall and his bowels, and made no effort to move, keeping me pinned to the bed.
I sighed and ran my hand through his hair again.  âI mean, I guess you could always come with me today.  Iâm going to be at lunch for hours listening to Kristin talk about her honeymoon and how her husband couldnât get it upâŚâ
Harry shot up, struggling to untangle himself from the blankets, his voice a bit higher as he spoke. âAlright, so Iâm gonna jump in the shower.â
***********
âSunscreen?â
âYes.â
âWool socks?â
âYes, dear. Three pairs.â
âWhat about chapstick? Did you remember to pack your inhalerâŚâ
âCheck,â he placed a soft kiss on my lips, â...and check.â Another kiss to my forehead. Â
I blew air from my mouth, moving the hair resting on my forehead. Â
He ran his fingertips along my forehead, tucking my hair behind my ear. âPeaches, weâll be fine. Â This isnât our first camping trip.â
I laughed shortly as Harry sat down on the edge of the bed, leaning back on his elbows. Â
âYes, because that went so well.â
Harry pouted as I zipped up his bag. âHey, we all made it back alive didnât we? Itâs not my fault Louis has no idea how to start a fire.â
I placed his bag by the door and then walked over to where he was sitting on the bed, placing myself on his lap. Â Â
âAlright, Iâll stop worrying. Just promise me youâll be safe, and whatever you do, please donât let Niall convince you to put out the fire by peeing on it. â
Harry laughed, wrinkling his nose. âWhy would he do that?â
I shrugged, âIt was on this outdoors show was telling me about and he said he wanted to try it.â
He laughed again and ran his hands through his hair before sitting up and adjusting me on his lap. âYa that sounds like something he would do.â
I looked at the clock on the nightstand which read half past nine. Â
âWell, youâre going to be late. Â You better get going.â
I patted his leg, lifting myself off of his lap and moved out of the way so he could stand up. Â He pushed off the bed, wincing and quickly sat back down, grabbing his stomach.
I held back his shoulders so he didnât topple over onto the floor. âWoah, hey are you alright, babe?â
He nodded and took a deep breath, before looking up at me.
âJust a bit of a dodgy stomach this morning. Iâll be ok once I get something to eat.â
I pushed his hair back with my hand, feeling how warm he was.
âAre you sure? I really think you might have a fever, sweetheart.â
He nodded and braced his hands on my shoulders, standing up again. Â
Taking a deep breath he smiled slightly. âIâll be ok, love. Iâm sure it will pass.â Â He kissed my forehead and moved past me to pick up his bag.
I pursed my lips and watched him as he picked up his bag, still clutching his stomach. Â I knew it was worse than he was trying to play off, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope it did pass. Â
After Harry left, I got ready and headed out to meet up with the girls. Â Allison, Holland, and Kristin and I had been friends since college, and still met up once a month to do a girls day. Â We were going to lunch first, the bistro on 10th, not 3rd because Holland swears a server spit in her food the last time she went to the one on 3rd, and then we were going to walk around town and go window shopping.
When I got out of the taxi to head into the restaurant, I checked my phone and saw that I forgot to charge it last night. Â It was at eleven percent which I knew wouldnât last more than a minute. Â I hesitated momentarily, biting my lip. Â I wasnât expecting any calls today, and Harry didnât have service anyways. Â I powered it down and tucked it away in my purse before heading into the restaurant. Â
Like I predicted, the topic of interest for most of lunch was Kristinâs husband's performance, or lack thereof.
Holland stuck a piece of steak in her mouth and shook her head. âHoney, donât even worry. Â The first time Brad I did it, it took six times to get it to stay up. Â I figured he lied to me when he said he wasnât a virgin.â
Kristin pushed her food around her plate and frowned, âYa, but Jack isnât a virgin, weâve done it loads of time before. Â But last week when it was supposed to be the best time ever it flopped like a dead fish.â
Holland shrugged. âHoneymoon jitters, maybe?â
Kristin shrugged, taking a drink, âI donât know. Have you and Harry ever had this problem.â
I choked a bit on the piece of chicken I was chewing. Â Itâs not that I really minded talking about this stuff, but I didnât think it was completely appropriate to talk about with with a child in a booster seat a few feet away from us. Â
I shook my head and swallowed. Â âUm, no. No, we havenât really had any problems.â
Holland snorted, âI wouldnât think so, Iâve seen him in his boxer briefs and he looks like he would be able toâŚâ
âIâm engaged!â
We all whipped our heads around to see Allison, holding up her hand and flashing a gorgeous engagement ring.
âAlli, that is beautiful!â
âWhen did it happen?â
She beamed and twisted her hand so the ring caught the light. âLast night!â
I picked up her hand so I could get a better look. âWhy didnât you say something sooner?â
She flipped her hair over her shoulder, picking up her fork and scooping off a bite of meringue from my pie. Â âBecause, Iâm going to be dealing with these issues soon enough, so I figured Iâd take some tips.â
Holland laughed. âWell, I know exactly where weâre going shopping.â
We all waited, looking at her expectantly.
âAlli needs some sexy, new lingerie.â
After lunch we took a cab to Cosabella, which is a lingerie boutique I had been to a few times. Â We spent most of the time picking out things for Allison, but as I was wandering I saw something that caught my attention. Â It was a shell pink, baby doll slip with lace cups and straps. Â The front was open and held together, under the breasts with a satin ribbon. Â Â I picked it up and ran my fingers through the soft, silky material, deciding I was going to get it. Â It would be my welcome home present for Harry when he got back from his camping trip. Â
Later, when we checked out we decided to call it a day, since it was starting to get dark out. Â We said our goodbyes and took separate cabs heading home. Â When I got home I headed straight upstairs to bedroom and set my bags on the nightstand before plugging my phone in the charger and turning it on. Â I was in the middle of taking my shoes off when my phone started buzzing uncontrollably. Â I picked it up and saw at least thirty missed calls, all from the same number. Â Before I had a chance to see who from, my phone started ringing again and I answered it immediately.
âHello?â
A womanâs distressed voice came over the line. âHello, Mrs. Styles?â
âYes, this is she.â
âOh thank goodness. Â Iâm Dr. Vaughn from Warrington, General hospital. Â Iâm calling to inform you that your husband was admitted about forty minutes ago, and we canât proceed with any further examinations without your compensation.â
My mind was spinning, Â not grasping what she was saying. Â My voice shook as I tried to maintain my composure.
âIâm sorry he-heâs in the hospital? What happened to him? Is he ok?â My voice rose with every word as I still tried to process what was happening.
âMaâam If you could get down here as soon as possible I will explain everything.â
I nodded frantically against the phone before realizing she couldnât see me.
âYes, uh, of course Iâll be right down.â
I hung up the phone and hastily threw my shoes on with one hand while simultaneously calling a taxi. Â When I got in I all but shouted the directions at the driver, and handed him one-hundred more dollars, telling him to speed if he had to.
My mind was going to every worse-case scenario as we drove through the city. Â What if he had gotten mauled by a bear, or had severe burns from a fire? Â Most of all I was fuming at myself for not having my phone on so I could have gotten there sooner. Â I was shopping for underwear, while Harry was suffering in a hospital bed, waiting for me to get the hospital so they could deal with is trauma. Â If he ended up with any permanent injuries that was on me. Â I didnât even want to consider that latter. Â He was ok. Â He had to be. Â
I ran my fingers, frustratedly through my hair and cursed silently at the traffic. Â âIs there anyway you could go faster?â
What seemed like hours later, we finally arrived at the hospital. Â He didnât even have the car completely stopped before I threw open the door and ran up to the entrance. Â I got inside and looking frantically around, hoping to find someone who could direct me where Harry was. Â I looked to the right, and saw the other boys in the waiting area. Â I headed over and Liam saw me first, standing up.
âLiam where is he, is he ok?â
He shook his head, wiping his hand over his mouth.
âThey wouldnât let us go back with him. Â When we brought him in he was in really bad shape. Â I noticed he was acting strange, but he didnât say anything. Â He just all of a sudden got really bad.â
âWell where is he? I need to see him!â
He gripped my shoulders and nodded.  âI know.  I just donât knowâŚâ
âMrs. Styles.â
I turned and saw a nurse walking towards us. She must have been the one I spoke to on the phone. Â
I walked up to her briskly. âYes, that me. Â Where is he?â
âFollow me and Iâll fill you in.â
I walked quickly by her side, keeping pace with her even though I wanted to run.
âYouâre husband came in with severe abdominal pain that we couldnât immediately diagnose, so if you could sign some consent forms, weâre about to take him to get some x-rays.â
I nodded, looking into every room that we passed, âOf course, but can I see him first?â
âCertainly, heâs right in here.â
I followed her as she turned another corner, walking into the first room on the right. Â I stopped a few steps behind her, mentally preparing myself for the worst. Â When I walked into the room I choked back a sob as my heart clenched in my chest. Â
He had sick down the front of his hospital gown and was clutching his stomach as he sobbed and cried out in pain.
I rushed to his side while trying to stay out of the doctors way.
I kissed everywhere I could reach on his face as I blubbered, my tears mingling with his.  I noticed there  was a bruise under his right eye, but other than that no other external injuries.
âHarry, iâm so sorry. Â Iâm so so sorry.â
He whimpered, wrapping his arms tighter around his stomach as his face completely paled.
I held back his hair as he lurched forward, vomiting all over himself again. Â
âOh, babyâ I cooed, rubbing circles on his back. Â I smoothed back his hair, taking it all into one hand, and fastened it into a bun with the elastic I had around my wrist.
He leaned back panting and wrinkling his nose, as some nurses moved to clean him up.
I grabbed the damp towel on the table next to me and sponged it across his clammy forehead. Â
He whispered something that was too breathy for me to understand, and turned his head away from me.
âWhat, Harry?â
I felt something brush against my elbow, and saw a nurse behind me with a clipboard.
âMaâam if we could get you to sign these consent forms.â
âOf course I justâŚâ
Harry cried out again, clenching his jaw and grasping his stomach. Â
There was so much going on I couldnât focus on anything.
âIf I could just get you to sign here miss.â
âYes, yes iâm sorry.â
I quickly signed what the nurse needed me to and turned back around.
âHarry, what can I doâŚâ
Another doctor came through the door. âWeâre ready to take his x-rays.â
I grabbed Harryâs hand and took a deep breath. Â âItâs ok baby, Iâm going to be right here.â
He pulled his hand from mine and spoke lowly. âNo.â
My heart clenched, and I tried to reach for him again.
The doctor in the doorway spoke again. âWe need to move him, now. Miss are you accompanying him.â
âYes-â
Harryâs breathing was a labored as he tried to maneuver to sit up.â No, sheâs not.â
I looked down at Harry, the expression that I was hurt, evident on my face. Â
Everyone stood still for a moment, and I tried to make eye contact with Harry, but he avoided my gaze.â
The doctor taking Harry for his x-rays was quickly becoming impatient. âAlright people we need to move. Is she coming or not?â
âYes I-â
Harry cried out in pain again and spoke through clenched teeth. âNo sheâs not. Â Please get out, someone get her out!â Â His voice was rough as he spoke, resulting in a coughing fit.
I blinked back a fresh wave of tears and nodded, clearing my throat before speaking. âOk. Itâs ok. I can just wait in the hall.â I bent down and quickly kissed Harry, telling him I loved him before moving out of the way. Â
I walked reluctantly out of the room, hoping Harry might call be back, but the rest of the room moved swiftly, getting ready to move him out. Â
I got to the wall across from his room and turned around, just as they were wheeling him out and down the hall. Â A nurse told me I could wait back in his room if I wanted to and she would report back to me when she had news. Â I thought about waiting in the main lobby with the other boys, but I sauntered back into the room Harry was in, because for a moment I just didnât want to be around anybody.
I sat down in the chair next to bed, put my face in my hands, and cried. Â It was a mix of sad tears, angry tears, happy tears because he couldâve been much worse. Â I let it all out, because I knew I needed to be composed when Harry got back. Â I needed to be the one comforting him.
I knew I should have been more persistent with him this morning when I knew he wasnât feeling well, but here we were, and I needed do everything I could to mitigate the situation.
I was left in my own thoughts for a shorter time than I expected before I heard people entering the room.
The same doctors entered the room as they wheeled Harry back in. Â He looked drowsy, but some of the color had returned to his face. Â I stood up and moved to his side, hoping some of the tension had relieved. Â âIs he ok?â
The nurse with the clipboard smiled at me, âHe is going to be just fine. Â We performed an x-ray and we able to immediately see that he had a Peptic ulcer inside the lining of his stomach.â
I looked at Harry, and before I could stop myself, my hand was running soothingly across his forehead.
The nurse scanned her clipboard again before continuing.  âNow, has he been taking any medication, such as, Asprin , Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Motrin,Advil,or Ketoprofen, regularly?â
I ran over the list again in my head, nodding âHeâs been taking Ibuprofen and Naproxen for his back, along with some muscle relaxants.â
She nodded, pursing her lips and scribbling something down. âThe daily use of these over the counter medications, also known as  nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, over a long period of time can irritate or inflame the lining of the stomach or small intestine, causing acid to damage the stomach walls and allow bacteria to get through.  This is how he ended up with an ulcer.â
âWell is he going to be ok? These things usually need surgery right?â
âWhile more severe cases need surgery we were able to diagnose, with an endoscopy, that his could be treated with several antibiotics  that will reduce the acid in his stomach and heal the ulcer.â
I let out a breath I didnât know I was holding as Harry stirred beside me. Â I picked his hand back up and he let me hold it this time. Â It might have been because he was too tired to pull away, but I held it tight. Â Letting us both know we were going to be ok.
Harry was discharged the next day around nine in the morning. Â Â Our only instructions were that he needed plenty of rest, and to only take the medicine he was prescribed.
When we got home I helped him carefully get upstairs and into the bedroom.  He said he was going  to jump in the shower so I took that time to grab him some food and some extra blankets.
I ran downstairs and pulled blankets from the hall closet before heading into the kitchen. Â I donât know what he felt like eating, but I figured sandwiches were always safe.
I fixed his food and grabbed it along with the blankets and medicine before heading back upstairs.
When I got in the room he was curled up on his side of the bed wearing a pair of grey sweats and a t-shirt. Â His hair was still bit damp and fluffy from the shower, little curls sticking up wildly.
âBaby, I brought you some food. Are you hungry?â
He shook his head and sniffled, snuggling further down into the duvet. Â I set the tray and medicine on his nightstand before spreading the blankets over him and crawling in beside him. Â
I settled down on my side, and he immediately scooted over and laid himself down on top of me, his body enveloping mine. Â He pulled up the blankets so they were tucked under his chin and nuzzled further into my chest, right above my heart. Â I relaxed and wrapped my arms tighter around him, my body molding easily into his. Â The weight, and warmth of him on top of me was comforting, making me realize how little sleep I had gotten in the last couple days.
I sleepily dragged my hands through his hair, twisting the curls around my fingers and petting it, soothingly as I gathered my thoughts. This went on for another moment until I felt something wet splash against my chest.
âHarry? Are you crying? Are you ok, do you need your medicine? Where does it hurt, baby?â
I started to move and reach for the medicine, but he shook his head.
âNo. No Iâm fine.â
I scooted down so my eyes were level with his, keeping my hand in his hair.
I could see his eyes were glossy as he sniffled again. âIâm just...sorry for being such a dick last night.â
I kissed his slightly chapped lips and sighed. Â âHarry, you have absolutely nothing to be sorry for. Â Iâm the one who should be apologizing for not getting there right when you needed me. Â I should have left my phone on, but I turned off because it was almost dead and I didnât know you were in the hospital until I got home.â Â
He silenced me by kissing me softly, bringing his hand up to cup the back of my neck, his thumb softly tracing my jawline.  When he pulled away his lips  lingered on mine as he spoke. Â
âItâs ok. Iâm not mad at you. â Â He pulled back a bit and stared at my lips as he continued.
âI just snapped at you because I was embarrassed. Â I didnât want you to see me looking like such a mess. Â Iâd been feeling ill for about a week and I was just too stubborn to say so.â
I nodded, brushing a finger across his eyebrow. âWell Iâm glad youâre ok now.â
He grinned, causing his dimple to pop, âMe too.â
He laid his head back on my shoulder and nodded towards my night stand. Â âWhatâs in the Cosabella bag?â
I smirked and kissed him between his eyebrows, âItâs a surprise for when youâre feeling better.â
I could feel him smile against me as he hummed, âYou want to give me a clue?â
âThat depends. Â Do you want to tell me how you got that bruise.â
He raised his hand and touched his cheek scoffing. âI almost forgot about thing. Â Well long story short Niall was showing me his homemade slingshot, and heâs not a very good aim.â
âNiall hit you with a sling shot!â
