Do you enjoy time capsules? I do. Looking back into the past in order to move forth into the future is a popular activity on the first day of the New Year. It shouldn’t be surprising that my preferred time capsule comes in the form of an aged, fine wine..., and that a Gran Reserva wine from Rioja was my New Year’s Day selection. Bright, elegant, and complex 2004 Marqués de Legarda Gran Reserva, DOCa Rioja was produced by Bodegas de la Real Divisa, which have been making remarkable wines, from the foothills of the Sonsierra Mountains in Rioja Alta, in very limited amounts, since 1367. Highly aromatic with savory notes, bright acidity, and a touch of smokiness. On the palate, mature and dried red cherries, porcini mushrooms, toasted walnuts, and cedar box. Ready to enjoy now, paired with a charcuterie board of a selection of olives, dill pickles, cured meats, aged cheeses, and rye crackers.
