The air in the makeshift shelter smelled like old wood, dust, and something faintly sweetâmaybe leftover candle wax or a forgotten perfume bottle cracked in a drawer. Y/N sat silently at the edge of a creaky twin bed that once belonged to someone long gone. Her fingers toyed with the hem of her jacket, picking at a loose thread while the quiet hum of voices echoed in the hallway. She hadnât spoken much since the run-in with the Leaves. The boysâStray Kids, sheâd learnedâhad been respectful, careful not to crowd her. They gave her space, but someone always seemed to be within eyesight. Like now. Han stood in the doorway, a bowl of rice in one hand, chopsticks in the other. He tilted his head, his expression open and easy. âYou hungry?â She nodded slowly. He set the bowl down beside her and didnât try to touch her or even sit down too close. Just stayed in her peripheral, a warm presence. âI know itâs hard. But you donât have to talk yet,â he said softly. âYou donât owe us anything.â The tears came suddenly, soundless. She didnât even realize she was crying until Jisung offered a folded handkerchief. He still didnât move closer. âIâm not gonna break,â she croaked. âI know,â he replied gently. âBut I still wanna be careful with you.â
It had been a few days. The group had found an abandoned villa on a hill, surrounded by a dying vineyard and fences they reinforced with old wood and wire. It wasnât perfect, but it was homeâat least for now. That night, Y/N couldnât sleep. She wandered downstairs to the kitchen, candle in hand. She didnât expect to see Jisung there, pouring hot water over a tea bag. He looked up and smiled. âCouldnât sleep either? She shook her head. âWanna sit?â She did. The candle flickered between them as she sipped the tea he handed her. They didnât speak for a long time. âI used to play music,â Jisung said eventually. âBack when everything was normal. Me and the guysâStray Kidsâit was more than a band. It was family.â She looked at him, eyes soft. âYou miss it?â âEvery day,â he whispered. âBut some things⌠you donât get back. You just learn how to carry them.â
A sudden cold front hit. The power hadnât worked in weeks, and the wood stove only covered so much ground. That night, Jisung found her shivering under a pile of blankets. âHey,â he whispered, crouching beside her. âYou okay?â She nodded, teeth chattering. âJust cold.â "Can IâŚ?â He gestured toward the blanket. She hesitated, then nodded. He slipped in beside her, careful not to touch too much too soon. But eventually, her body leaned into hisâwarmth, safety, the beat of another heart. His hand found hers under the covers. âThank you,â she whispered. He kissed her knuckles. âYouâre safe now........."
"I promise."
