The only people who are going to get angry about me pointing out THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HANDOUT AND A HANDUP are those who know they can do better, but choose not to. Not those who genuinely need help and unable to do anything better about their situation. Yeah... the difference is in if you are capable of doing better but don't want to, you'd rather be lazy and complacent. There are people who can't. And I'm not talking about what others think of you, I'm talking about what YOU KNOW ABOUT YOURSELF. Obviously there are things people dont see (my disabilities are mostly invisible, for instance, but I also know I can push myself because I have an indomitible spirit.. so I always try), I'm talking about what you KNOW. You know you can do better for yourself but don't even wanna make an effort? You're getting handouts. The few instances I do go to food pantrys etc, or accept a free load of firewood in the middle of winter when I'm struggling to keep up with the demand to cut my own when I'm in physical pain, etc, or the few times I've asked for donations to get kibble for my cats .. yeah, I consider those handups. I always try to do my best; I dont want shit for free. A handup is when you're thinking "I'll accept help now, but I need to see what I can do to improve my situation for myself". A handout is when you don't even freakin care about providing for yourself even if you are capable with no limitations and just wanna see what you can get for free, and think you're entitled to everything. See the difference?
