Even though National Quilt Day was yesterday, we’re going to continue our virtual quilt show with some more of our collection. These are a few made by Jason’s mom. Like most people of her generation, Kay was definitely a renaissance crafter before that was a thing. She was a quilter, a painter, she used to crochet and knit, and she was a garment maker. Here are three of her quilts from the past few years. Kay always said of quilting: “Why on earth would I want to cut up big pieces of fabric into little tiny squares then sew them back together into a big piece of fabric again?” Even so, we’re thankful that she cut up some fabric and sewed it back together into bigger pieces of fabric for us. 😁Swipe left to see all three quilts. 👈🏼 . . . First is her quilts she called 40 Below. This was an inside joke with Shannon because the first year he went home with Jason to meet the family, it was -40° and everyone got a good laugh when he went outside and sniffed… his nose froze together.🤪Dallas got in on this photo shoot. Yes, this is her regular spot on the bed. . . . Second photo is of the tag she put on the quilt so we would know who made it and when. Smart lady. 👍🏼 . . . Third photo is a throw she made called Classical Music. 🎶 We love the contemporary fabrics she used in this one and it gets a lot of use pretty much year round. . . . Fourth photo is the tag with the name of the quilt, the maker, and the year. #tagyourquilts . . . Fifth is Wild Thang! This is the companion to the precious throw quilt. She gave these to us one year for Christmas. Again, we love her color sense with the contemporary fabrics. When we aren’t using it to fight off the PNW chill, this one is on display in the living room. These two throws are the last quilts she made. . . . Sixth is the tag for that throw. We can’t stress enough the importance of tagging your work. Next up in our virtual quilt show for National Quilting Day, is this gem made by Shannon’s great grandmother. (Swipe left to see all four photos.) This one, along with two others, was found after she died. For years, nobody knew where these quilts had disappeared to. When her bedroom was being packed up, they lifted up the mattress and found them sandwiched between her mattress and box spring protected by white sheets. No labels were found on any of the quilts so nobody knows for sure when they were made but they think they were made when she was very young. The hand piecing and hand quilting is gorgeous with the tiniest little stitches and the fabrics are all still stunning. Three quilts in this showcase… all three made by Shannon’s grandmother. First is a wall hanging that she made for him to put up in his dorm room. Yes, he had quilts hanging in his dorm rooms along with a matching pillow that we still use in the fiber studio. All hand pieced and hand quilted. The finished hanging is 46x46”. . . . Second is another wall hanging that measures 18x27” and is all hand pieced and hand quilted. She made this one to hang in his bedroom when he was a kid. . . . Third is a queen size quilt she made when Shannon was in high school right before he graduated. This one saw him through college and now hangs in the fiber studio on a quilt rack made by his brother from wood on the family property.
