She had come crawling, spluttering, sides heaving, out of the canal’s waters. Grasping hands had found cold stone and, gripping tightly to the handholds within its crevices, hoisted herself out of the liquid’s night reflection and into the uneasy darkness of ill-frequented alleyways. Ivy’s memories had been held back by the priority, her mind chanting orders of importance. Find safety. Find whereabouts. Find family. The missing steps would be filled in later, planning would matter little if done so with a panicked and strained mind. So it had come to pass that the shadows of the buildings and the lapping waters of the canal became audience to the slumping, staggering woman with gritted teeth and burning eyes.
And the night grew on.
It was well within the roots of the city that Ivy stopped, back flat against the wall as she slid down. The dark was her blanket and the stone was her pillow. Cradling her pack, Ivy tread softly into a light slumber. The city was still a mystery to her as was its inhabitants. For all she knew, the river had carried her down miles and miles but not worlds away. Night crept into its grandfatherly stage, the stage where its colors were worn and softer, but the stars still twinkled, pinpricks of light in a fading sky. And there she still slept, matted hair clinging to her scratched face and clothes cold and smelling strongly of saltwater and faintly of fish.
