what’s the difference?
Hi Kieran. How easy was it to convert to a paleo diet? After 5 years of marathons, my stomach finally said no more to gels in London last month, and now won't tolerate anything remotely sweet during training. Not good when I have Ironman UK in 10 weeks! Long term though I am wanting to move into ultras and multiday running events next year, with the view of attempting MdS in 2017. I've read all the fors and against paleo for endurance athletes in the magazines, but just want an honest opinion!
Hi Halvin, I found it easy to switch once I’d made the commitment to do so. From a practical point of view, the hardest part is when you’re out and about at lunchtimes, airports, stations and in those grab-and-go moments where you’d have reached for a sandwich before. You need to work a little harder to find suitable food in these moments but it can be done.
When it comes to energy, I had no problems at all, either in my training or during the MDS which I did completely paleo/gluten/wheat free. In fact I was one of the few in camp who didn’t get hungry.
I use some of the Whole30 information as a basis along withe excellent guidance from the team at the PaleoGym. The food I eat is now more varied and tasty than ever and the positive effects on my training and performance are pretty tough to argue against.
This way of working helped me get sub-3 in London and a Top 100 MDS finish. I’m as lean and strong as I’ve ever been.
I wasn’t until I tried it but now I’m a big believer.
