When a halfa gets killed in human form, they die, falling into ghost form, but the human form is preserved as usual when they're in ghost form since they're always dead then. They're stuck as ghosts, unable to reach their human form while they're healing until their body is able to support life again.
When it happened the first time to Danny, he panicked, thinking he had full-died and was a full ghost now. He had a bit of a breakdown and disappeared for a few days until he woke up from an exhaustion-nap back to human. Those days were filled with a few too many existential crises, but he's come to term with his potential immortality and is just glad he's still half-alive.
