Can't believe I was cursed to be utterly OBSESSED with Joseph from the Bible. What an isolating experience. No one gets this man like I do.
Most people don't know much about him and don't care to, and other Christians assume I'm reading too much into him, like I'm about to start worshipping him like a god??? Which is just a really weird assumption to make about my behavior, especially if you've only just met me. Like, I'm just autistic, not trying to start a one-person cult. Calm down.
But like. He is SUCH a fascinating dude. He was born objectively one of the most beautiful people at the time. The Bible makes note that he was drop dead gorgeous. On top of that, the dude starts having prophetic dreams and can interpret the dreams of others??? I mean come on! How is that not epic?
And the garment his father had made for him is usually translated as a well-made coat or robe, though the actual wording in the original Hebrew is "Ketonet Passim". The only other time we have evidence of this phrase is in a passage about the daughters of a king wearing special clothing made just for them, and this clothing is called "Ketonet Passim".
His father made him a princess dress. A princess dress!!
Now, we don't know exactly what this means for Joseph, whether he would identify with some sort of trans label or enjoyed cross dressing or perhaps the cultural meaning of the garment changed over the years, but it's still really fascinating, is it not? To know that this wasn't just a pretty, colorful coat, but something completely different than any of the robes anyone else wore in their day to day lives.
And the sheer level of forgiveness Joseph holds in him is insane to me. I aspire to have such a kind heart. He did not forget that his brothers hurt him and sold him into slavery, and he tested them to see if they would do the same to Benjamin, but he had already forgiven them in his heart and once he saw that they really changed, he let them know that. He promised them and their families safety and food and shelter and kindness, even though he held immense power and the ability to make them pay. He could've so easily gotten vengeance, but he didn't.
I sometimes joke that he basically psychologically tortured his brothers, and to be fair, he did, but like... I forgive him. He was making sure they were no longer wicked and also even while tormenting them, he gave them free food during the famine, so it all evens out imo lol
Also! He was just so likeable and people enjoyed having him around. We know this because despite being a foreigner and not trained as a slave, he became the most liked and trusted slave in Potiphar's house, and then when he was falsely imprisoned, he didn't become bitter and instead became the most trusted and liked prisoner, so far in fact that the warden trusted Joseph to basically walk around freely in the prison and tend to other prisoners.
And then!!! Because he was so smart and well-educated and blessed to understand dreams, he was able to help the Pharaoh when no one else could AND came up with a plan so Egypt wouldn't fall during the terrible famine.
And also of course, his faith never failed and he trusted in God at all times, but I feel even non believers of Abrahamic religions can find his story interesting and compelling. Even if you don't believe that there really was a guy who could understand and interpret dreams while being absolutely gorgeous and really smart and potentially queer and insanely likable, you can still get why I love this story so much, no?
I just have so much love to give to Joseph and no one understands.
