Since returning from my Santa Fe trip, Iāve been fighting escapist urges and establishing residency at home. Ā I realize that sounds a bit ridiculous, but itās just difficult for me to stay put. Ā Like, very difficult. Ā
I find I donāt know how to relax or deep breathe. Ā I am not of my ilk or time or place and cannot stand deep yogic breathing. Ā It has the adverse effect on me, in fact. Ā Ā
And so what? Ā How privileged a discomfort it really is, to have a panic attack in my own home. Ā A home that will not be summarily ripped away from me, and should not, all things being equal, take much calculated effort to maintain for as long as I so wish.
How truly lucky I am.
Home means different things to different people at different times, and itās contingent on so much else. Ā Interpersonal relationships, physical/mental heath, political constraints (and the often tyrannical regimes shaping them), whole ecosystems. Ā Itās a much murkier concept than just the brick and mortar that go into building physical structure, if only for shelter and safety. Ā
āHome,ā as a concept, is not safeguarded. Ideally, itās where the heart is, but just as often, itās a site of abuse; for Gil Scott-Heron, home is where the hatred is. Ā
So thereās a lot to unpack. Ā And maybe to then re-pack and take on the road. Ā Is your feeling or schema of āhomeā connected most strongly to your childhood, a place someone else - if you were lucky enough to have support - helped make for you? Ā Maybe your sense of home is most tied to a love and/or family youāve since made. Ā
āIt goes wherever you goā is the takeaway message from indie-pop artist Haley Bonarās āHometown.ā Ā Her sweet and dreamy vocal delivery made me at first take the sentiment to be romantic. Ā Youāre at home as soon as you lay eyes on that sweet boo of yours. Ā That is definitely possible, and very nice! Ā Ā
But also, what if itās to say your āhomeā was never really what you wanted it to be, and that youāre actively trying to escape it. Ā Maybe youāre always on the run, and home is no more meaningful or grounded than wherever you happen to be at any given moment (āThere Is No Home,ā Jana Hunter). Ā
If you spend time in one place for long enough, formative memories get made. Good memories, bad memories, and everything in between. Ā Hopefully they balance each other out - at least inasmuch as they mimic the unpredictable and up-and-down patterns of Ā what most would consider to be an overall ābalancedā life. Ā Like, you fucked for the first time in that bed, and it was awesome! Ā Then your dad accidentally ran over your dog in the driveway, and it was awful. Ā
When an event so large shakes your home - death, breakups, natural disaster - a haunting presence can drastically tilt the scales. Pin it on a former lover. āIs this what you wanted ⦠to live in a house that is haunted ⦠by the ghost of you and me?ā (āIs This What You Wantedā Leonard Cohen). Pit it on an unforgiving, small-town rumor-mill (āKatie Cruel,ā Karen Dalton).
The point is, a personās sense of home can be totally shaken up at any given moment. Ā Sometimes, itās in a Ā confusingly serendipitous way. Ā The Talking Heads, my favorite band of all time, hit this in āOnce in a Lifetime.ā Ā Honestly, how the heck did I get this beautiful house, with this beautiful wife? Ā And okay, something weird then totally happened and now Iām living in a shotgun shack. So weird. Ā What!?
Life is not linear, and homeās a trip. Ā Where is home for YOU right now? Ā If youāre able to find peace there, I think you can count yourself lucky.

Haley Bonar support at The Komedia, Brighton
I'm so delighted to be opening for Haley Bonar at the Komedia (Brighton) next Monday. I have been a big fan of her music for some time now.Ā
Calm and soothing, yet upbeat and rhythmic. Haley Bonar has an amazing quality that makes you question if you should be crying or dancing.
