Haitian since 1804 | 🇭🇹
History of the Haitian Flag 🇭🇹🇭🇹 —————— The first purely Haitian flag was adopted on 18 May 1803, on the last day of the Congress of Arcahaie, Haitian lore holds that the newly appointed revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines created the flag by taking a French tricolor and ripping out the white center, which he discarded. He then asked Catherine Flon, his god-daughter, to sew the remaining bands together. The white pale removed, the blue was taken to represent Haiti's black citizens and the red the gens de couleur. . . After the overthrow of Emperor Faustin-Élie Soulouque in 1859, Haiti remained under the blue-red flag until Franc̦ois (“Papa Doc”) Duvalier came to power. He spoke of a “black revolution” for the nation and in 1964 altered the national flag to the black-red vertical stripes that had been used by Faustin-Élie, King Henry I, and Emperor Jacques I. Duvalier was succeeded by his son, Jean-Claude (“Baby Doc”), but the latter was forced to flee the country in 1986. As of February 25 of that year the old blue-red flag was reestablished. . . The coat of arms of Haiti was originally introduced in 1807, and has appeared in its current form since 1986. The coat of arms consists of a palm tree surmounted by a liberty cap and flanked by flags, rifles, hatchets, cannon, anchors, masts. The motto “L’Union fait la force” (“Union makes strength”) is also included. . . . The name Haiti (or Hayti) comes from the indigenous Taíno language which was the native name given to the entire island of Hispaniola to mean, "land of high mountains." ————- #haitianflag #haitianheritagemonth #haitianhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CPAtNKagsGB/?utm_medium=tumblr

Haitian Flag Day 🌴🇭🇹
Catherine Flon is known for sewing the first Haitian flag in 1803. According to tradition, she created the country’s first flag on the last day of the Congress of Archaye on May 18, 1803. Jean-Jacques Dessaline who is Flon’s godfather cut apart a French tricolor with his sabre, which demonstrated his desire to break away from France. The pieces were given to Flon who stitched them back together, while leaving out the center white strip. The blue and red stripes on the flag represent a union between the black and mulatto citizens of Haiti.
