When David returned from where the Fae had taken him and proved so much more confident, charismatic and easygoing, David’s changeling was quite disturbed. More disturbed still when he began to turn back into the simple wooden branch he had once been long ago.
David’s changeling knew three monsters who had taken a liking to him and they found him before he could fully turn to wood.
“The true David, I say, is whichever we prefer”, said the first monster, “Let us kill the interloper and be done with it.”
David’s changeling did not want to hurt anybody, so he declined this.
“How can you be the real David?”, asked the second, “You are coming undone just by having your identity drawn into question. What is so good about being David anyway? If you wish it, there is a bleak magic I can offer you. With it, you could redefine yourself as whatever you desire and be free.”
But David’s changeling was too frightened of the bleak power of self-definition and too attached to what he had already accomplished as David to throw it all away now. He declined this too.
“New David is boring and poorly written!”, exclaimed the third monster, “He is too perfect, too clean. I like you better with all your flaws and insecurities. I want to watch you grow and the other you has no room for that. So let me reify you as you. That your being David can be questioned no more.”
David’s changeling was not opposed to the idea of sharing his life with David and so the third monster worked his miraculous trick. David’s changeling was David’s changeling no longer. There were simply two Davids now where only one had been prior. The glamorous one found this unbearable and left, cursing his other half and the monsters all along his way.
Yet another Chibi-Ex tribute. This time starring:
Perquisitor Haiduil Pompeius, and Ildinia Kills-With-Words
Sometimes, when the wrongness of the world is particularly pronounced
when it menaces with traffic, taxes or a combination of puddles and shoes with holes in them
when they cannot bear the weight of it all
and the squelching of their drenched socks
Haiduil Pompeius sometimes just lies on the pavement for a little while.
Perquisitor Haiduil Pompeius, Princeps of the Forge and Warleader of the Host of Ninuan (they/them)
dying of Rust
They found an old and abandoned industrial park, where the rust had spread from the steel to the concrete, to the old wood paneling, to the tall grass sprouting through the cracks in the asphalt to the air itself. Time and space were somehow also rusty there, creaking along slow and unsteady and with great noise. And from that day forward the rust was inside of them, patina spreading across their skin, their joints locking up with a metallic shriek and their bones becoming misshapen and brittle. In a desperate attempt to escape from this impossible torture, they began collecting symbols of time spent and time saved, like detailed time sheets and little art pieces and soaked them in water, salt and vinegar. And so their personal time rusted rapidly, leaving them increasingly out of step with the flow of days until eventually, their time, their flow of causality and their ability to participate in the world all shattered into oxidized dust.
There was once a great forge realm in the Not, a place of art and industry. Folk came from all corners of Ninuan to bring metals and to be gifted wondrous treasures forged in the impossible fires of this sacred place. Its name and that of its visionary ruler are as lost as the place itself, shattered and buried deep under layers of unyielding existence. Now, there is Haiduil Pompeius, Princeps of the forge and architect of the Excrucian machinery of war. Weary are they of the rust, the ability of the world to eat away at and wear down even the hardiest Ninuan steel and so they must eventually retreat to their native grounds, a bustling workshop where the rare precious lambda-metals are safe from corrosion and waste. It's much more humble a place than the nameless forge realm Haiduil remembers, but then, they are much humbler a leader than the nameless tyrant. They arrive and they sit and the artisans of the place begin to gently sand the rust off them and replace what can't be salvaged, while excitedly displaying their latest work or discussing current and future projects. Haiduil's authority here is not one of absolute deference, but born of deep respect for their craft. They're not in charge as much as just a particularly valued expert and peer among passionate artists. It is a shame then that the workshop is always operating on the very brink of dissolution. The world pressing down upon it is cutting it off from all sources of raw material throughout Ninuan. And while the artisans are careful not to waste what they do have, without an influx of ore and fuel the workshop will die.

“Hey, uh, you kinda know everybody around here, right?”
“Most people come here for coffee regularly, yes.”
“Well, the other day, I tripped pretty bad, hurt my knee, spilled my groceries everywhere.”
“Yikes.”
“Yeah. And uh this... person? They just come walking over, offer me a hand to get up, help me pick up my spilled food... Just really helpful. And I say thank you but before I can ask for their name, they just wave me off and hobble on down the street.”
“Oh, how nice!”
“Mh hmm... But here’s the thing. The entire time all this was happening, they just looked utterly disgusted. Like they were wading through sewage or something.”
“Ah! Yes. That’s Haiduil Pompeius. Look, don’t take it personally. They look at everything that way.”
“That looks like it hurts.” said Eulalia with sympathy.
“We’re not doing this.” said the Excrucian.
Eulalia frowned. “Doing what?”
The Excrucian sneered and grumbled: “Oh I know what you’re up to. Taming the monster with your sweet words, treating it with humanity and showing it that it doesn’t need to murder. There’s always someone like you.”
Eulalia rolled her eyes. “I just said it looks like it hurts.”
“It does.” sighed the monster. “And no amount of Noble pity will help. Save it. You’re going to need it.”
Of all the bad days Haiduil had ever had, this was certainly one of them.
