he put himself in danger. and according to a few of the implications from things that bruce and alfred say, ("That attitude is about to get him killed" , "He dived into those thugs like someone looking to die." , "I've come upon him, several times, looking at that battered old photograph of his mother and father, crying.") he was seemingly depressed and a possible suicide risk.
retcons, future iterations, and new-52 are all different things. all im saying is that the original reason jason was benched was Not because he was the overly violent robin.
